A week long homework project looking at pupil's means of travel to and from school.

A week long homework project looking at pupil's means of travel to and from school.

‘To School, and Back Again’ is a one week homework project, suitable for year, Nursery to Primary 7. Two photocopiable sheets are included – an information sheet for parents and the ‘To School and Back Again’ table. The project can be run in one class or as a whole-school homework task. Below are some of the reasons for using the ‘To School and Back Again’ homework project: • As a whole school research project to contribute to a School Travel Plan. • As a way to measure change when the school is working on sustainable journeys or promoting active travel. ‘To School, and Back Again’ can be run before and after a programme of change and the difference in responses measured. • To practise numeracy skills in completing tables and to provide data for further learning on presenting data. • As part of cross curricular studies on topics such as journeys, transport or health and physical activity.

Instructions, curriculum links and worksheet to carry out a hands up survey of school travel

Instructions, curriculum links and worksheet to carry out a hands up survey of school travel

A hands up survey for looking at how pupils travel to school and how they would like to travel to school. This is a good project for a small group of pupils, such as a pupil council, eco-schools group or road safety group to conduct. This group could also analyse and present the results. Alternatively, one class might carry out the survey as part of a transport or community project. The survey can also provide useful evidence in writing a School Travel Plan. The survey is an excellent numeracy project involving collecting and presenting data.

Complete lesson on Pictograms for Year One/ Year Two

Complete lesson on Pictograms for Year One/ Year Two

A complete lesson on completing pictograms with differentiated worksheets, a lesson plan, a presentation with a hook and also a plenary activity to assess the children's understanding. The lesson is aimed at an introduction to pictograms for a year two class or as a way to extend a year one class to mastery. The hook on the presentation includes pictures from a safari that I went on in Africa. I told the children that I wanted to know exactly how many animals I saw on my safari so I kept tallies on each day I went out (I said I went out on 3 days to include differentiated numbers to tally and put into a pictogram.) I showed the children the tallies and questioned and then gave them the worksheet to complete. I told the children that they could either draw the animal or a smiley face as it was the maths I was interested in and not the drawing! It worked really well and I used it in a lesson observation for a job.
