Sport treiben - subordinating conjunctions 'wenn' and 'als'. OUTSTANDING LESSON!

Sport treiben - subordinating conjunctions 'wenn' and 'als'. OUTSTANDING LESSON!

A lesson for a higher ability GCSE class focusing on subordinating conjunctions using 'wenn' and 'als.' I was recently observed by Ofsted with this and was told I would have received an outstanding grade, as all students made rapid progress and the lesson was heavily differentiated. 1) I have attached a higher level text about sport - students play the ignorance game in differentiated groups and pick out words they they think others won't know. If others can't use the context to work out the meaning of these words, the initial team scores points. Students learn these words for their homework. (Personalised homework). In the next lesson, the words will appear in sentences for students to translate. 2) I have attached my powerpoint, which contains 3 key questions re: wenn and als for learners in the lesson, to enable all learners to progress. 3) A 'rip and run' activity - students work in differentiated groups ripping a sentence off and translating it. If it's correct, they are challenged by getting another translation sentence. If not, teacher uses targeted questioning to enable to the group to make progress. 4) I have attached a game of sentence auctions, used to individually challenge students' misconceptions. (Moving from group level to individual level). Students look at word order with 'wenn' and 'als' and bid on correct sentences and lose money if they bid on incorrect sentences. I use fake Euros! More challenging sentences are worth more money! Students can also translate into English etc.

This document consists of 6 x aiming for 8 challenge cards and 3 x aiming for grade 5 challenge cards. Students get a challenge question on the topic of 'Meine Familie' and must prepare an answer to the question, paying attention to the specific success criteria provided. Typically, I give students one of these as they enter the door and they answer the register with their answer. They add any improvements in green pen.

GERMAN VOCABULARY 99 WORDS & PHRASES PRACTICE & REVISION (4)

GERMAN VOCABULARY 99 WORDS & PHRASES PRACTICE & REVISION (4)

PERFECT FOR DEVELOPING GERMAN LANGUAGE SKILLS AS WELL AS PRACTICING AND REVISING GERMAN VOCABULARY! This set of games and activities helps students to develop and embed their beginning GERMAN vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way. They’re ideal for independent learning, and perfect for pair and small-group work. Students can quiz/test themselves and each other on a regular basis - they're a very popular alternative to more traditional vocabulary 'drilling tasks', and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. The games and activities are perfect for your home school too! This set features 99 BEGINNING WORDS AND PHRASES that students are likely to meet in the INTRODUCTORY stages of their GERMAN learning: Länder; Zahlen 61-80; die Uhrzeit; Adjektive; Essen und Getränke; Fragen und Antworten I've described the resource as suitable for Grades 6-9, but it does depend on the age at which your students begin GERMAN - the games and activities work well with any appropriate learning group, depending on their starting point. There are two non-editable files in a zipped format: FILE 1: GERMAN and ENGLISH game cards, with all the words and phrases to use in a variety of games and activities - I've suggested a range of games and activities that have worked well for me. The game card template encourages your students to apply their developing knowledge of GERMAN practically and creatively. FILE 2 is an 18-page REFERENCE, RECALL AND WRITE WORKBOOK, best photocopied double-sided, and double-stapled down the left-hand side. This format is very learner-friendly, and easily kept in a learning file or folder for regular reference. All the words and phrases are listed GERMAN-ENGLISH in language categories. There are 3 differentiated RECALL AND WRITE CHALLENGES to help your students really review and revise the vocabulary: CHILLOUT CHALLENGE: students write from memory all the words and phrases in ENGLISH from a GERMAN prompt - all the words/phrases are in their language category CHAMPION CHALLENGE: students write from memory all the words and phrases in GERMAN from an ENGLISH prompt - again, all the words and phrases are in their language category SUPERCHARGED CHALLENGE: all the words and phrases appear in random order, and switch from GERMAN to ENGLISH at each question - this really does put students' memories to the test! Encourage students to complete the NOTES AND NEXT STEPS template, which helps them to reflect on their learning, and to set progress targets. SETS 1-3 with 297 words and phrases are available at the special price of $8.00: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/german-vocabulary-297-words-and-phrases-practice-and-revision-11590 Please read the Terms of Use carefully - this resource is copyright, and for single-teacher/purchaser use only. Differentiation - German sentence starters - word order and opinions

Differentiation - German sentence starters - word order and opinions

I designed this lesson for a group of students who struggled to give opinions in German, whilst using sentence starters such as Meiner Meaning each, Meines Erachtens, Ich denke, dass...... 4 powerpoint slides contained. Slide 1 & 2 should be laminated and given to students and put onto a keyring to support leaners. (This helps weaker students and it is a good strategy to help PP students, who may not have access to self-help guides). Slide 1 details 5 complex sentence starters and gives examples of how they work. Slide 2 contains 'wow words' to finish opinions - positive and negative phrases. (Relating to the topic of marriage) Slide 3 - Contains rules for an exciting game of 'Sentence Auctions.' Each student starts off with 140 Euros. Sentences displayed worth different amounts. Sentences displayed are both correct and incorrect. If you bid for a correct sentence, you win that amount. If you don’t bet, and the sentence is incorrect, nothing happens. If you bet, and the sentence is incorrect, you deduct that amount. If you don’t bet and the sentence is correct, you deduct that amount. Slide 4 - Students compete against each other, responding to a mixture of correct and incorrect sentences on mini-whiteboards, focusing on word order.
