Theme Park Manager percentages game (full lesson)

This game puts students in charge of a theme park, for which they will choose from a selection of rides using the ride information cards, which detail the running cost and ticket price of each ride, the percentage of visitors that buy a ticket for it, its risk rating, and the cost of insurance for it. Each day a dice roll will then generate a random event which impacts on the fate of the rides, and students will have to use their knowledge of percentages to calculate the number of visitors buying a ticket for each of their rides that day. Included: – A powerpoint presentation outlining the rules and taking you through the game; – A set of information cards for students to use to choose their rides; and – A colour coded table for students to fill in throughout the game to keep track of the popularity of their rides, any fines they have to pay or compensation they are awarded. This is an excellent resource for consolidating students’ knowledge of how to calculate percentages of numbers and increase numbers by a given percentage. It also makes use of other basic number skills and strategic decision making. The game should take around 50 minutes start to finish, but it will be within your control to increase or decrease this as appropriate. Year 4 rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 lesson

A rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 lesson following the new White Rose scheme of learning (from 2017). I have previously taught rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1000 in the Autumn term so I have created this lesson as a recap. I have used this lesson to aid my not so confident mathematicians and identify my Greater Depth children. Based on Singapore Maths (Maths No Problem - the only book recommended by the DfE) All maths lessons at my school follow this structure: Fluency recap - something they have done before, get them thinking. Useful vocabulary slide - children to add to the slide as you go through the topic/unit. The teaching aspect of the lesson. Identifying/creating Steps 2 Success (S2S) Children go away and complete their activity. There is one activity for all children. The first few questions (1-3) are aimed at ARE. The questions get harder as they progress the final questions are the ones where you can identify your Greater Depth children as those questions require reasoning and explanations to the questions. The differentiation within the lesson is the equipment provided and the support given to the children. Dong Nao Ting. A plenary that all children complete in their books. The question is taken from the mastery document. This will again clearly identify your GD children. Some children wont be able to answer the question but they can have an attempt at it. I have taught this lesson in Year 4 but could easily be adapted for UKS2. This CSI themed Math Murder Mystery activity will engage students by taking them on a journey to solve problems and puzzles. Students narrow down the suspects by completing the activities and marking them off from the suspect list until one person/animal is left. The problems in this math mystery focus on Grade Three “Operations & Algebraic Thinking” and “Number & Operations in Base Ten”.
