Positive Postcards

Positive Postcards

The two images can be printed back to back in colour on white card. The front of the positive postcard shows a superhero holding up a rainbow with the words ‘Power of Positivity’. The writing side of the postcard includes a positive poem to encourage children to believe in themselves and boost their confidence. There is space to write a short message as well as an address which can be sent home or it could be the class name and school address. I used these for several purposes: Improve mental health and well-being. Engage children with behaviour problems catching them doing something postive. As a reward system. Given to children who have low self-esteem and confidence. If used in the class room rather than sent home, I would leave it in the child’s place at the end of the day so it was a surprise for them in the morning. Please note: The cover image only shows part of the postive postcard logo.

How SMSC, PSHE & RSE help learners manage what's important in life

How SMSC, PSHE & RSE help learners manage what's important in life

As human beings, what is of value to us strongly influences our priorities, thinking, choices and actions - although currently many of us are unaware of just how powerful these driving forces are. However matters, such as the state and importance of young people’s mental and physical health and our stewardship of the environment, are changing our understanding of how we are constantly being ‘values led’ and altering our behaviour patterns so as to be more in alignment with what is important to us in life . When underlying VALUES are deliberately identified during the discussions and debates about topics, issues and concerns raised in SMSC (Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development) and fundamental British Values sessions , PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic education) lessons and RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) slots, young citizens begin to appreciate the significance of how values provide standards, principles and signposts that guide decisions and actions. This understanding then enables them to choose and use values to positively impact all aspects of their own day-to-day lives. In doing so, they become progressively better able to gain essential intellectual, emotional and social skills that allow them to flourish, make good choices, maximise their potential and lead fulfilling lives throughout their school careers and on into their adult lives. See ‘How does VALUES LITERACY enhance young people’s LIFE PROFICIENCY?’ -

Throughout this scheme pupils will be taught to compose, perform and appreciate differing varieties of dance. Pupils will learn how to create and develop material that communicates the powerful message of the dangers of drug addiction. Pupils will be expected to respond to a stimuli, drawing from their differing reactions and emotions to create modern choreography telling a story. Pupils will learn to develop movement though the use of level, canon and unison, working in particular on lifts and floor work. Pupils will be discussing mature and sensitive content throughout the scheme, watching videos and using stimuli designed to test their conceptions and enhance their understanding. This scheme of work tackles a serious contemporary issue of drug taking. Attention to the characteristics of drugs, the effect on behaviour and the emotional state of an addict provide both the narrative for the dance and the focus for the development of expressive skills. The key priority for this scheme of work is for pupils to use dance as a medium to express their thoughts and feeling about a serious social issue - alongside the physical challenges of creating the dance are the opportunities to discuss concerns relating to drugs.

Action Stations - A Six Week Homework Project to promote Physical Activity, Numeracy and Literacy

Action Stations - A Six Week Homework Project to promote Physical Activity, Numeracy and Literacy

Action Stations is a six-week, whole-school homework project. It aims to raise awareness amongst pupils and their families, of their own levels of physical activity, the World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines and the health implications of a lack of physical activity. Action Stations also develops numeracy skills with the completion of tables and literacy skills through a written element to the homework. The project asks children to record an adult in their family's physical activity levels for two weeks, and to compare their findings with the WHO's recommendations. Following this, they then record their own levels of physical activity for two weeks. Again, the children are asked to compare their findings against the WHO recommendations. It is vital that parents and carers do not view this project as intrusive and judgemental. The tables where physical activity levels are recorded are designed not to be returned to school and it is stressed to parents that the school does not need to know whether they or their children met the targets. The project aims to raise awareness amongst the school community and to provide a real-world context in which to practise literacy and numeracy skills. Both parts of the project include a sheet to be returned to the school so that homework completion can be monitored. If the school is considering a school travel plan (STP), work to promote active travel to school, or any other form of promotion of physical activity, this homework project is an excellent place to start. It is hoped that taking part in the project will encourage less active families to consider where they might find space for physical activity in their lives. The school run, for some, can provide an excellent opportunity for this. Physical activity should be seen as distinct from sport. While sport encompasses physical activity, people can be physically active without ever taking part in sport. Meeting the WHO guidelines is about making physical activity a part of normal daily life.
