Movies 4 Social Studies - Hidden Figures - Civil Rights & Cold War

Hidden Figures centers on the struggles of three African-American women that worked for NASA during a pivotal time in American History. As you watch, you might find it interesting that as America struggles in the race to space, they also have many problems on earth with the topic of race. Hidden Figures is a great movie that touches upon many topics: American History Civil Rights Movement Race Gender Equity Cold War Race to Space Math Science Careers I use it in a U.S. History and Geography class but could substantiate using it in Psychology, Sociology, Math, or Science classes. This lesson includes a movie review (three days), an answer key, and 33 questions that guide your students through the action. You will have to purchase the movie. Teacher Note: Students can identify with the young characters in this movie. The entertainment qualities of the movie also spark student interest. Leverage both to scaffold students into more complicated concepts in your course. The movie also serves as great background information that you can use as conversation starters in class. These conversations are the seeds of relationship building and help you make it more than a movie, you will make it memorable.

The Wave (1981) - Worksheet to support the TV Programme

The Wave (1981) - Worksheet to support the TV Programme

Written to support the teaching of the Edexcel 9-1 History GCSE the worksheet supports the 1981 US TV version of The Wave. The film is used to explore the reasons for why a totalitarian system was allowed to develop in Germany from 1933 and how individuals, and particularly the young were coordinated. It makes for an alternative way of teaching both the establishment of totalitarianism in Nazi Germany as well as the limits of its appeal and opposition. The worksheet is written in Publisher formatted to print in A3. This however, can be amended and saved as a PDF (included) for A4 printing: 'Based on a real incident at an American high school in 1967, this short TV movie shows the horror of mob psychology and group pressure. The high school teacher gives his students a lesson in the history of Nazi Germany, not by having them read a chapter in a book but by turning them into Nazis ……. without their even being aware that it is happening.'
