Background Radiation

A fun and engaging lesson presentation (34 slides) which looks at background radiation and explores the natural and artificial sources of this radiation. The lesson begins by getting the students to understand that background radiation is all around us. Moving forwards, they will begin to meet the different natural sources. A mathematical element is added to the lesson as students are challenged to construct a pie chart to show the % contributions of each of the sources. They are given a step by step guide on how to draw the segments before working on this themselves. A number of quick competitions are used throughout the lesson to maintain engagement and to introduce new key terms and challenge them. There are progress checks throughout the lesson so that student can assess their understanding. This lesson has been written for GCSE students but can be used with KS3 too.

A good resource for use with the new GCSE (9-1) and for recap when looking at further mechanics in A-level. The lesson plan introduces the basic ideas of circular motion with notes to help students understand. They then complete an activity looking at how various factors effect circular motion, helping them get familiar with the key idea that force is towards the centre of the circle. Finally they apply their knowledge to answer a question about orbits. Students can peer mark this and AFL can be achieved by them placing a post it note on the board over the number of marks achieved by their partner, giving you a quick idea of the understanding of the group as a whole. Instructions for the practical and a mark scheme for the question is included.

The Earth Science card sort is comprised of 3 cards for each for different rock types [an image, the name and fact]. Simply print [in colour or black and white] and then cut out the set of cards [laminate if you wish to make class sets]. Students then shuffle the cards and sort them into their correct sets. Wordsearch on the theme of 'Famous World Volcanoes'. Powerpoint so can be used on the board or printed as a worksheet. Includes space for students to explain the keywords and suggested extension activities. Can take 10 minutes or an hour, depending on which activities the students complete.
