An engaging lesson presentation that runs the lesson in a quiz format, with numerous rounds, in order to introduce the students to the different stages of the life cycle of a star. The lesson begins by introducing students to the first three stages (nebula, protostar, main sequence) which all stars go through regardless of their mass. Key details about each stage are discussed and considered. Moving forwards, this lesson ensures that students understand that the stages after the main sequence are dependent upon the mass of the star. SDRplay provide a “software defined radio” (SDR) which turns a Raspberry Pi or PC into a full communications receiver capable of picking up radio signals across the spectrum from long waves to microwaves. All you need is the SDR and a simple antenna which is often just a length of wire. A fully-resourced lesson that looks at the 7 electromagnetic waves, their differences, similarities and uses. The lesson includes an engaging presentation (54 slides) and associated worksheets. The lesson begins with a number of engaging activities to get the students to find out the names of the 7 waves in the spectrum. Students will be challenged to use their knowledge of the properties of waves to explain why they have been arranged in this particular order. Moving forwards, some time is taken to ensure that students recognise the similarities of the waves. The rest of the lesson focuses on the uses of the waves and a homework is also set to get students to increase the number of uses that they know for each wave. There are regular progress checks throughout the lesson so that students can assess their understanding at critical points. Make sure you’ve got internet access for this one, since this PowerPoint for BTEC Levels 2 and 3 Applied Science (with a little tinkering) needs to be able to access Kahoot for your starter and Youtube for one of the main activities. Ideally your learners will need to have access to internet-enabled devices so they can research and take part in the Kahoot quiz. Estimated lesson time: 2 hours.
