KS3, KS4, Eng Lit, Unseen Poetry, Langston Hughes, "Mother to Son", close reading, analysis

This powerpoint lesson is intended to encourage a close reading of ‘Mother to Son’ by Langston Hughes, asking the pupils to consider the idea of the staircase as a metaphor for life. The poem is initially introduced in 3 chunks, questions being asked of each section. The title of the poem is not given until near the end of the lesson where the pupils are given the poem in its entirety and asked which (of a selection of Langston Hughes’ titles) is the most apt title for this poem and why. Questioning runs through the poem focusing on language and connotation, the speaker’s tone (and by extension, viewpoint) and the structure of the poem. The lesson culminates in the pupils being asked to use their ideas from the lesson to write a formal response under this title:
In the poem, how does the writer present the speaker’s ideas about life?
