Word searches are really successful for language learning - they help beginner learners engage confidently with the written word, building their key vocabulary. They’re great for independent learning too, particularly with the answer keys, which I find essential with this kind of activity. My students of all ages enjoy working with word searches, and I use them in lots of different learning contexts, not only when I’m introducing the focus vocab - they’re great for refreshers, starters, plenaries and sub lessons for example. I also have sets of word searches ready in folders for our ‘free-choice’ learning time, so that students can select what they want to work a little more on.

All the grids are differentiated - there’s a really broad range of challenge. Sets 1-6 have five French-French grids, with an additional English vocab list to complete, and give English-French grids, with an additional French vocab list to complete - so maximum opportunity to engage with and practice vocab! These are designed for Primary French learners, with a single grid per 8.5 x 11 pages, landscape format - I’ve found this to be the best design for my young beginner learners, and also my older learners, who are beginning to familiarize themselves with a new language. Set 7, the major French cities set, has five differentiated grids, with accompanying differentiated templates - this is great for creative thinking and manipulating language - and students genuinely enjoy creating word searches for each other! These are in portrait, rather than landscape format.
