Information Gap 1 - Looking for a Job

Information Gap 1 - Looking for a Job

Information Gap 1 - Looking for a Job Get the students working in pairs. Give one person of each pair the Student A page and the other the Student B page. There are four different jobs being advertised in the local paper. However, there are ten gaps on each page. Students should ask each other questions to find out the information that is missing from their page, then write it down, asking for spellings as necessary. Encourage them to communicate verbally to get the answers, rather than letting each other look at their pages! When all the students have finished, bring the group back together and ask checking questions to elicit the answers, as well as to find out how much the students have understood about the other material in the adverts.

New Products Group Work Exercise

New Products Group Work Exercise

Here are another two group work exercises. They both work the same way, which is like this: Stage 1: hand out copies of the description of these new products to each of three groups (because there happen to be three products here!). If you had a class of 24, you could have six groups of four and mentally divide the room into 2 sides, with three groups on each side. The pupils need to read the description of their product and understand what it is and how it works. Stage 2: the groups need to choose a presenter, who will visit the other two groups and present their product to the others. The group also needs to produce a visual aid for the presenter, which has the following three pieces of information on it: 1) the name of the product; 2) a picture or sketch of the product; and 3) a one-line slogan summing the product up. If the product were a brand of Irish beer, the visual aid would have 'Guinness' at the top, a picture of a glass of Guinness in the middle and "Guinness is good for you!" at the bottom. Stage 3: the presenter takes the visual aid to the next group and tells them about her product. The people in the next group need to ask questions and listen carefully because … when their presenter comes 'home', they'll need to tell her about the other two products. Stage 4: when the presenters have all come home (they get to make their presentations twice in this version of the exercise), their home group needs to tell them about the other two products. This exercise will take about 30 minutes and it's very easy to adapt it, so that if you have a mixed class (of, say, trainee nurses and car mechanics), you can find products especially suited for their backgrounds. One of the documents attached here has new products designed for pet owners whilst the other one includes Squid Soap! Btw, I usually hand out coloured pieces of paper for the groups to make their visual aids with, one colour for one side of the room and another colour for the other. That way the teacher can easily see if one of the presenters has taken the wrong turning in finding her next group. I also usually impose a time limit for each presentation (3-4 minutes usually works well), so that all the switching groups happens at the same time.
