French Trapdoor Speaking

A set of three trapdoor activities to help Year 7s practise producing oral language in French. The basics (name, age, personality, appearance) are covered in one and there are further activities on the topics of school, places in the town and free time. Students should work in pairs with one trying to guess the option from each box the other has chosen. If they guess correctly, they move on to the next box and if not, they must go back to the start.

This 61 page booklet (including answers) contains new GCSE style reading, writing, speaking and translation questions for Key Stage 3 students. The booklet contains activities on the topics of ‘technology in everyday life’ and ‘free-time activities’, from the AQA theme Identity and Culture. There are 6 subtopics: Technology in everyday life, sports, TV/film, music, eating out, and festivals. For each of these subtopics, there are 6 activities: a reading task, translation (short paragraph) from French into English, sentences to translate from English into French, a writing task (short passage similar to the foundation writing exam), a photo (like in the foundation writing exam) and a role-play. There are also 6 extension activities which bring together all of the subtopics: a longer reading task, a paragraph translation from English into French, a 90-word task, a 150-word task and a photo card (like in the speaking exam). This booklet can be used in KS3 or for revision in KS4 (foundation). It can either be used to supplement work in lessons as you teach the topics of technology and free-time, or for assessments. It could also be set as cover work, as the answers are included. Five questions each on Roland Garros, the Monaco Grand Prix, 24h du Mans, le Marathon des Sables, le Tour de France, and a further five questions on other random French sporting stuff. You could of course make a competition of it, or just get pupils to answer a selection of questions.

As-tu une vie active? / Es-tu actif?

KS3 presentation aimed at Y8 students to describe and explain whether they think they have an active lifestyle. The presentation uses basic activities with je joue/je fais then helps the students improve their writing by adding frequencies, negative structures (ne…pas/jamais) and opinion infinitive phrases. Finally we look at 2 sample answers (active and not active lifestyles) where a typical basic answer has been improved. We discuss these improvements (underlined in texts) and students can then write their own answers. First slide is hidden and would be printed as a handout.
