GERMAN TELLING TIME DOMINOES #1

GERMAN TELLING TIME DOMINOES #1

These telling time dominoes games are really popular with students - they’re a great alternative to more traditional ‘drilling’ activities, and help students become more independent in their learning. They’re really ideal for pair and small-group work / centers. The focus in on o’clock, half past (which can be a bit tricky in GERMAN!), quarter to and quarter past the hour. There are 3 differentiated challenges: clock times in order, with the time phrase first; clock times in topsy-turvy order, also with the time phrase first and finally, clock times in topsy-turvy order, but with the clock face first. The background design is different on each challenge, so students can easily identify which challenge they’re working on. I’ve included a reference booklet, which my students always find helpful as a ‘forever’ reference resource, and particularly when they’re learning how to tell time. There are two GERMAN-ENGLISH lists - the first with all the time phrases in order and the second corresponding to the second challenge, with all the time phrases in topsyy-turvy order. The resource consists of three, non-editable files in a zipped format: dominoes games x 3 challenge levels reference booklet Although it’s time-consuming, laminate the dominoes if you can, as they’re easier to play with, and will last for a very long time! The TERMS OF USE explain the product license: the games are copyright, and for single-teacher / purchaser / classroom use only. VIELEN DANK UND VIEL SPAß BEIM SPIELEN!

German Easter and Christmas Venn diagram cards

German Easter and Christmas Venn diagram cards

A group of words for Easter and for Christmas - can be printed, laminated and then used with either a large printed venn diagram or what I usually do is draw one with whiteboard pen of the desks. I tend to use this as one activity in a carousel lesson.

German Easter/Spring colour by maths

German Easter/Spring colour by maths

A colour by number but with a difference - colour by maths - ideal for Year 7 or for primary. There are both Easter sheets and some srpring based ones too. I’ve used some lovely sheets from another person and converted them into German. A great way to practice colours but also to incooperate numeracy.

Year 9 Venn Diagram Reading Comprehension

Year 9 Venn Diagram Reading Comprehension

A set of cards and reading comprehension to be used with a Venn Diagram. The students read the two descriptions written by two girls about their appearance, they siblings, their school and hobby likes and dislikes and a little on media/use of technology. With a Venn Diagram drawn on a table these can be printed out and laminated for students to sort them into the correct section of the Diagram. Answer sheet provided.

Gesund oder Ungesund - German Healthy eating Venn diagram

Gesund oder Ungesund - German Healthy eating Venn diagram

An activity I use as part of a carousel. Cards with both healthy and unhealthy foods. Need to print off and ideally laminate. You then either print off and laminate a large Venn diagram. I tend to just draw one on the table with a board pen. Students then sort the cards into the correct sections of the Venn diagram. Good use of numeracy/mathematical skills.

Die Schule - end of topic sheet

Die Schule - end of topic sheet

Mixed activity sheet on school in German, includes school subjects, uniform clothes. There’s also numeracy in here - a work out the number activity, understand the times and put them on the clock faces and an ordinals exercise. Ideal as either end of topic homework or classwork. I tend to use these when my students are doing their speaking assessment - they get it once they’ve been tested to keep them occupied while I assess the others.

World Book Day in German for Years 9 - 11

World Book Day in German for Years 9 - 11

I designed this resource for an able Year 9 group, but you could use it for GCSE groups too. You could start by reading out the book descriptions on page 3, and pupils guess the book you are describing. Then pupils have to match up the images of the book covers, authors and main characters. Then they use the sheet to compose their own book review. It’s differentiated, so all can manage phrases from the yellow box, and some will also manage ones from the green. You might want to give out the text of the book descriptions you started with, you may prefer not to. A nice plenary with an able group is to get them reading out their book reviews, and pupils guess which book they are describing. Hope it’s useful!

They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarise themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling numbers in GERMAN. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on Numbers 0-31, but also as an all-year-round starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as the goal is not simply to learn how to count in GERMAN, but also to enjoy working with GERMAN, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed! The resource comprises the following 3 files: Set of 36 cards, 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Depending on how long you want the activity to last for, choose a particular number of cards per small group of students, and place them in a tin, bowl or small box so that students can easily select a card, and then replace at the end of the activity. You can simply place all the cards in the bowl/box and let students work their way through, either in a single lesson, or across a series of lessons - I’ve found 15-20 minutes across several lessons can work really well. Students do need to remember to file their recording sheets carefully! 2-page answer recording sheet. Best printed double-sided. 2-page answer key, again best printed double-sided, and laminated for longevity. One answer key for each small group is sufficient. GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES

GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORD SEARCHES

PERFECT FOR DEVELOPING LANGUAGE SKILLS IN GERMAN WITH A REALLY FESTIVE FEEL! Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in GERMAN, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 33 GERMAN CHRISTMAS WORDS, which will also help to develop students’ awareness of some GERMAN Christmas traditions and figures, such as Saint Nicholas and Knecht Ruprecht. There are 5 GERMAN to ENGLISH grids, where students are prompted with the GERMAN words, and look for them in GERMAN in the grid. For additional consolidation, each grid also features an ENGLISH word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test! There are also 5 ENGLISH to GERMAN grids, where the prompt words are given in ENGLISH, and learners have to find the GERMAN equivalent in the grid. For additional consolidation and practice in writing and spelling in GERMAN, they also complete the GERMAN word list on each page. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. There is an answer grid for each word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. The word searches are in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading from left to right, facilitating learner engagement with the activity. I’ve included a reference sheet in both GERMAN and English - print double-sided, and either laminate it to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general reference resource. Students will have to look carefully at some of the words they’re looking for, as they may appear slightly differently - for example, they may have to find ‘CANDLE’ and work out what that is in GERMAN - only the prompt DIE ADVENTSKERZE appears in the reference list. Use as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the CHRISTMAS season. Students do like the challenge of working their way through a number of grids on one go! There are two versions of the word searches and keys - either with a color or B&W background — you may prefer to print in B&W to keep prep costs down. Laminate the answer keys if you can - they’ll last for many CHRISTMASTIMES to come! The resource consists of six non-editable files. Color and B&W. 40 GERMAN word-only bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). Color & B&W. 40 English word-only bingo 12-square grids, 4 per page (10 pages). Color & B&W. 4 12-square grid template for students to create their own word or picture grids for each other. B&W. 10 jumbo picture-only 24-square grids. Distribute the grids among students, several grids per student. Color & B&W. 1 GERMAN and 1 English calling card, with all the words written in full These games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game. GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CHRISTMAS BINGO! Before playing, read all the words out loud in GERMAN several times, with students repeating carefully - this not only helps students develop their GERMAN pronunciation, but also introduces them to words they may not actually know. There are some nice long words to encourage students to look very closely! Students can also have their own calling card to read out loud from, one for a small group of students is sufficient - this will help them to link sound and spelling in GERMAN. The words focus on definite and indefinite article, plural and singular, masculine, feminine and neuter, which maximizes opportunity to practice grammatical concepts too. Give students a little time to have a quick look over their grids first. Create bingo teams, each with a CHRISTMAS team name - playing competitively in teams keeps up a lively pace! For each game, select a different Christmas word as the ‘winning word’ for students to call out when they win the game. Students must recite all the words in their grids to check that they have actually won - also giving another opportunity for practicing language. Call out GERMAN words for GERMAN grids, GERMAN words for English grids, and English words for GERMAN grids to vary the challenge. Please read the TERMS OF USE carefully. GERMAN CHRISTMAS NUMBERS 0-31 CHALLENGE CARDS

GERMAN CHRISTMAS NUMBERS 0-31 CHALLENGE CARDS

PERFECT FOR CREATING A FESTIVE FEEL IN YOUR CLASSROOM AND IDEAL FOR DEVELOPING GERMAN LANGUAGE SKILLS AS WELL AS PRACTISING AND REVISING GERMAN NUMBERS 0-31! 36 DIFFERENTIATED QUESTIONS WITH RECORDING SHEET AND ANSWER KEY GERMAN NUMBERS 0-31 CHRISTMAS CHALLENGE CARDS really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their knowledge of GERMAN numbers in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. They’re great for helping students familiarize themselves with, and develop competence in, speaking, reading, writing and spelling numbers in GERMAN. The cards are useful not only when you’re focusing on Numbers 0-31, but also as a starter, plenary and general ‘pick-me-up’ activity, as often as you can in lessons during the run-up to CHRISTMAS - the goal is not simply to learn how to count in GERMAN, but also to enjoy working with GERMAN, and to feel confident about doing so. The questions range in complexity and challenge, and are great for honing numeracy skills too - especially if calculators are not allowed! The questions and design provide lessons with a real festive feel - I’ve included a mini-reference list to help students with their GERMAN CHRISTMAS words - one or two per small group of students is sufficient. The cards do look great printed in colour, though I’ve also included a B&W version to help keep costs down. The resource comprises the following 6 files: * 2 sets of 36 challenge cards (colour/B&W), 4 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper. Print, laminate and cut out. Depending on how long you want the activity to last for, choose a particular number of cards per small group of students, and place them in a tin, bowl or small box so that students can easily select a card, and then replace at the end of the activity. You can simply place all the cards in the bowl/box and let students work their way through, either in a single lesson, or across a series of lessons - I’ve found 10-15 minutes across several lessons can work really well. Students do need to remember to file their recording sheets carefully! * 2-page answer recording sheet (x2, colour/B&W). Best printed double-sided. * 2-page answer key (x2, colour/B&W), again best printed double-sided, and laminated for longevity. One answer key for each small group is sufficient. Students find this reference sheet really useful - download it for free here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/french-numbers-0-31-reference-sheet-11743634 The resource consists of 6 non-editable files in a zipped format.
