Applying Visual Literacies in ESL Learning - Creating Stories about Place

Applying Visual Literacies in ESL Learning - Creating Stories about Place

This combined lesson and plan is designed forAdult Migrant and Intermediate ESL/EFL and ESOL learners who are ready to expand their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through imagining different places. The associated activity includes visual texts (images), a series of questions to guide classroom interactions, and vocabulary for elicitation toward developing effective speaking and writing skills. This is a semi-structured activity where students are encouraged to draw on their own experiences of different places. The activity moves the student from being a visual spectator to being a textual critic. By learning in an independent but guided way students can better prepare for the independent learning expectations of tertiary or workplace learning. This resource can be adapted for a particular curriculum or used in a stand alone session of 2-4 hours.

Descriptive Writing lesson- A journey through the forest

Descriptive Writing lesson- A journey through the forest

This lesson enables students to think about mood and atmosphere when writing to describe. They are given the task to describe a journey and then they have to do this using the opposite mood/atmosphere. My students really responded to this lesson and can now identify mood and atmosphere differences in other texts.

English Travel Writing and Hotel Designing Booklets, and a Speech Writing Lesson

English Travel Writing and Hotel Designing Booklets, and a Speech Writing Lesson

Here are two great big booklets to use with your classes while teaching travel writing. The Travel Booklet includes 10 independent tasks - creative and poetry writing, collages, designing and many more. Mix this together with the 15 page booklet for designing your own hotel in a group of 5...and you have got two time saving dreams. The Hotel Project Booklet is something you could do in the classroom and can span over 6 lessons, or is something your class could do as a group project for homework. Whatever you choose, these two booklets are full of creative English activities to help your students learn the art of travel writing, working in a team and presenting speeches. FREE planning sheet as well! Finally, I have added my Speech Lesson which could be used to introduce the skills of crafting a speech using effective persuasive devices. Now, this is a lesson I usually use with students in Year 9 and 10, however it can be adapted and would be useful to feed into the speech the students are preparing in the Hotel Booklet. Grab this bundle now! They are worth it...there are over 10 lessons worth of work in this bundle. Don't miss out! 23% off when you buy these three together.

Project - Design your own Hotel: Speaking and Listening Booklet

Project - Design your own Hotel: Speaking and Listening Booklet

This is a great project booklet which will span over about 5-6 lessons. It is designed for students to work through the initial tasks to help their knowledge about hotels/holidays so they gain an understanding and knowledge of what they should be designing. It also helps them with web design, as they have to annotate and design their own. Once these pages are complete, your groups of five get designing, planning and speech writing, in order to create a 5-10 minute presentation to the class. I used this as an opportunity to assessment my students on their speaking and listening skills. This booklet is packed with activities and even a clip link for the students to see some of the top 10 Hotels in 2016. This is a great buy and can be used repeatedly. Could be used in class or as a homework project. 15 page booklet. What will it teach my students: To work in a team To create a speech/script To learn about target audiences To present ideas to the class in a group To understand and design webpages and a hotel To keep to a time limit when presenting What does it include: Preparation task - positives/negatives of hotel life, investigations into top hotels, persuasive language analysis, target audience, website analysis and annotations, website design. Main Task - 5 Roles for the students to decide between themselves, with details of what they each need to prepare and design in the role they have chosen. Time - 1/2 Lessons to prepare 1/2 Lessons to design and practise their presentation 2 Lessons for presentations - class of 30 Happy Teaching!

Diversity Day: Writing a Travel Blog - Thailand

Diversity Day: Writing a Travel Blog - Thailand

A single lesson that's designed to be taught to multiple students across different key stages. I taught this on a Diversity Day where students could choose their own timetable. The idea is that they are introduced to the world of Backpacking via organising a fictional trip to Thailand and writing a travel blog about it. You'll need 2 D6 dice to help randomly generate the events.

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

An entire, lesson by lesson SOW with guided reading questions, games, activities and assessments. Although this is reading, there are lots of writing assessments woven in so that students see how the disciplines support each other. I hope it inspires some of your students the way mine have taken to it! I used the pdf of the book which is available online for some of my weaker students and also watched the television series. The resource as a whole was excellent for my G&T students who really enjoyed the family's eccentric lifestyles and saw more than a bit of their own lives paralleled despite the historical context. There are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning with Geography and History, so speak to your fellow teachers and see if you can cover it at the same time as they are teaching about WW2, post-colonisation, Greece, coastlines, or Globalisation. Please rate and review it if you enjoy it :)
