Extra recess? Persuasive writing example with questions

Extra recess? Persuasive writing example with questions

This persuasive writing piece models for students how to lay out a simple persuasive argument about something they all have an opinion on - recess/play! After the reading are some questions to check for understanding about the arguments made and the layout used by the writer. Finally, it gives the opportunity for students to express their own opinion and give reasons for their choice. I used this soon after introducing persuasive writing to my class. After they returned late from recess we had a class discussion about whether extending recess was a good or bad idea. I think introduced the idea of persuasion before giving them this example of a piece of persuasive writing. It was interesting to see if they came up with the same/different arguments I made in my written argument for having extended recess.

Playing for the Team. A resource for EAL/D Middle Years students.

Playing for the Team. A resource for EAL/D Middle Years students.

EAL/D Bundle for teachers of Middle Years students. The resources in this bundle have been prepared for EAL/D students with personal backgrounds where limited literacy is common. These materials also are appropriate for EAL/D students from literate backgrounds and for mainstream students aged 11 - 14 in need of additional literacy support. The focus of these resources is the story, ‘Playing for the Team’. This is an original story presented in three different versions. Version 1 is the simplest form of the story, whilst the ideas, language and vocabulary of Version 3 are more complex and sophisticated. The key objective addressed in these resources is student competency in reading for meaning, and understanding how reading comprehension ‘works’ within three levels; literal, inferential, reflective (also known as evaluative). Supporting materials include a suggested teaching sequence for a series of lessons, explicit teaching strategies and notes for teachers. Resources for students include learning activities on vocabulary, story sequence, read & retell strategies and three levels of comprehension.

'Playing for the Team' is a story presented in three different, but related versions. Version 1 is a simple story about a football team. The code is not identified, so students with an interest in any form of football should find interest in the story. Version 3 contains the most sophisticated language and is the most complex version of 'Playing for the Team'. The story supports explicit teaching strategies for teaching working with EAL/D students as they learn about three levels of reading comprehension. Related resources and targeted student work-pages are included in additional resources also with the title, 'Playing for the Team'.

Yoga English - Universal Poster Activities for the Mind and Body

Yoga English - Universal Poster Activities for the Mind and Body

Yoga English is pretty well exactly what it sounds like: yoga + English activities = a new literature experience! Included are 9 posters for you to put around your classroom, each with a different yoga pose and set of questions and thinking/discussion prompts (as well as a brief intro on using this resource). Meant to be used while studying literature (novels, plays, short stories, etc.), the questions are universal and character-centric... which means you can use them again and again. Hello, last-minute planning! Except, these resources will help you bring creativity, thoughtfulness, discussion, and rejuvenation to your class, so it's the best kind of last-minute planning. The types of prompts included will be especially useful and relevant if the characters in the literature you're studying are any of the following: - in complicated relationships - unstable - in want or need of something - changing OR resistant to change - poised and strong - power-hungry - sturdy and well-formed - flimsy and weak - in need of some introspection (who isn't!?)

The worksheets as part of this pack are all related to the movie and include: A Venn diagram, a cut and paste match up of characters, a PowerPoint with links on youtube and a question and answer written worksheet about conflict. Comprehension questions on one of the monologues from the film and plenty of visuals. One of the sheets is suitable for a lower ability student (disability). This is good for differentiation.

Adaptable for all different subjects for embedding spelling skills, this resource gives you space for four words whose letters learners will use to create further words. A simple activity, but very helpful for learners who struggle with spelling as this highlights every single letter in the word. I'd recommend that you use vocationally relevant words or subject-oriented words that you'd like your learners to be able to spell. This starter activity can support with this.
