Christmas Science

Christmas Science

A selection of Christmas themed Science lessons, including designing and testing hand warmers for Santa and turning pennies into gold. Most of these resources are my own, some ideas and resources have been borrowed from others. However, I have pooled resources to make a bank of Christmas themed science lessons, so science can be taught right up until the end of term.

2018 AQA GCSE Biology Unit 2 (B2): Eye Biology L5

2018 AQA GCSE Biology Unit 2 (B2): Eye Biology L5

This lesson is for teaching the above named lesson as part of the Homeostasis and Response module of Biology Unit 2 (B2) of the new 2018 AQA GCSE specification for GCSE Biology. The lesson has the following features embedded: Lesson has Bloom’s Taxonomy embedded throughout which are also graded for differentiation. Stretch and challenge tasks throughout (including Grade 8-9+ questions and extended writing) AfL (3 progress checks embedded) Differentiation is strong as has been noted in formal school observations for the last 2 years of teaching AQA. Narrative of lesson structure is clear and focused as well as engaging. Pre-starter prepared. The lesson is geared with top-down approach pedagogy and provide inclusive differentiation for low attaining and medium attaining pupils as well. The lesson should be ‘tweaked’ to meet the needs of your own pupils.

AQA Biology revision - communities and abiotic/biotic factors

AQA Biology revision - communities and abiotic/biotic factors

A board game with cards to help pupils revise the key words in ecology and the different abiotic and biotic factors. I print the game board A3 and then print the questions onto coloured card. All you then need are dice and counters and pupils play in groups of 3/4. I get them to write notes/make flash cards on any questions they don’t get correct.

Protoctists Year 8 Lesson PowerPoint + Extensions (KS3 8Dd) Algae Unicellular Organisms topic

Full lesson PowerPoint sufficient to teach a broad range of abilities about protoctists and their cellular features, with a focus on the importance of algae. The lesson is in keeping with the current KS3 UK National Curriculum, is easily accessible for students and simple to follow for teachers. Also included is an ICT extension task summarising the impact that fungi, bacteria and protoctists can have on human health. I have used this previously for a full additional lesson of consolidation while delivering the unicellular organisms topic.

Debates 101

Debates 101

This resource is for all in education, from KS1-5 and even at university level, it makes debating fun, accessible and has great impact. It includes a ready to use generic template, structured stages and prompts and some guidance for debating motions. It is useful because it is tried and tested, student, teacher and parent voice indicates that it makes a positive difference to learning and engagement. The learning objectives are skills based (empathy, listening, collaboration, research, collation, reflection, application, synthesis and presentation) as well as content driven as determined by the user’s choice although all debates usually improve an awareness of the social, economic and ethical aspects of an issue. The differentiation opportunities are vast, these can be either by outcome or role allocation (e.g. captains will develop their leadership skills and may be the more able in the group). As stated at the start, it is linked to all levels and types of curricula, standards and specifications. My tip is just to try it out!

AQA GCSE BIOLOGY/TRILOGY - Mastery Booklets for the 7 Teaching Topics

AQA GCSE BIOLOGY/TRILOGY - Mastery Booklets for the 7 Teaching Topics

I have put together ‘mastery booklets’ that can be used for independent study for pupils to use after a section of the course has been covered. They are designed (with past paper questions and the answers) for the students to complete themselves. This is to help them gain a deeper knowledge without impacting on teacher workload. All the teacher needs to do is record when the students have completed and annotated the booklet. I have split the 7 sections into the topics for the paper 1 and the paper 2. These could be used for cover work and revision before the exams. Hope they’re useful. Harret

Competition in animals - within species - storyboard activity

Competition in animals - within species - storyboard activity

This is a worksheet (slide 1) and a series of stimulus pictures. Make up a story to suit your class. They need to know that the species is peafowl; males are peacocks; females are peahens; offspring are peachicks. The peacocks ‘strut their stuff’ in order to gain the attention of the peahens. Then the peahen is soley responsible for bringing up the chicks. Students then write their own version on the storyboard ws. Credit should be given for correct use of scientific key words.

Interdependence - predator/prey graph - pyramid biomass

Interdependence - predator/prey graph - pyramid biomass

I always found that students struggle to draw predator/prey sketch graphs. So this is a half done graph for them to complete. The worksheet has 2 identical pages so that you can print 2 pages on one to give A5 worksheets if you need to. The powerpoint also includes a pyramid of biomass. I haven’t included this on the worksheet because it is good practise to be able to draw the levels correctly using a sharp pencil and ruler!

Kite Graph for Biotic and Abiotic data

Kite Graph for Biotic and Abiotic data

Plot data onto the spreadsheet and get a kite graph out. If you are looking at environmental factors affecting biotic components of an ecosystem, then this template will plot up to 2 abiotic sets of data over the kite. Thus you can see at a glance if the environmental factors are affecting your biotic species. You may plot any combination, eg, pH and light, or ph and moisture, or temperature and light. there are endless combinations you can look at, whilst comparing to your species research.
