I’ll be using this with year 1s so I have tried to keep the emotional language as simple as possible. Children will take their names off the classroom door as they arrive and pop them into the labeled pot corresponding to mood.

It includes at the end an activity for the children using informal units of measure.

Presentation to introduce what tessellation is. It shows pictures of tessellation in nature then human made tessellation and asks the children what they notice. It then teaches what tessellation is with picture examples. It sets children an tessellation hunt activity and then a task to create their own tessellated pattern at the end using 2D shapes.

The Power point recaps different UK coins (their values). Then the power point introduces the cafe role-play where children have to calculate the cost of a person’s order and then work out what coins are needed to pay for it. It goes on to challenge them further to investigate all the combinations of coins that could be used to make the amount. It finishes with some thinking questions and a final amount investigation (a larger amount needing several coin combinations). Originally used with a Year 1 class as a home learning activity.

A simple chart enabling the children to compare the weather between Wales and Brazil. It was used with year 1 as part or our Rio de Vida Context for Learning. Children are required to draw a weather symbol in each country’s section for each day (key of symbols provided) then put in the temperature of the different countries. There is then another section for them to add in other information e.g. humidity, precipitation etc. (A list of options for this section is also included.) It has a link to the MET office website in the blurb at the top of the sheet.
