George Gershwin was an American composer and pianist who lived from 1898 to 1937. He was born in Brooklyn, New York and began his music career as a “song plugger” in Tin Pan Alley, playing and promoting sheet music. As a composer of popular music and Broadway musicals, one of his most pieces of work is the opera “Porgy and Bess” [1935], which included the hit “Summertime”.
