A fun KS2 comprehension word activity based on Cardinal Directions - North, South, East and West. Children read the word lists for each compass point and say what they understand by each of them. Can they think of any more of their own – words, phrases or idioms containing North, South, East or West? There is a quiz where children are asked to say, find or write the answers. Dictionaries and/or Internet research can by done. An answer list is included.

A complete lesson for EYFS or KS1 based on Autumn and animals that are often associated with Autumn. There is a power point to start, with a page on each of the 5 animals represented: red fox, red squirrel, barn owl, hedgehog and badger. Each page shows a photograph of the animal and 6 facts about the animal to discuss. There is then a writing template for each of the animals. Children can recall some of the facts they have heard, write a story or poem about the animal. The final worksheet is a labelling sheet where children match and write the words under the pictures. The can then colour the pictures or they could draw their own.

Here is a good way to introduce children to Limericks as part of World Poetry Day or any poetry topic. There is an example of a completed limerick showing visual images. There are 2 other limericks where the rhyming words need filling in. Children use the visual images and words to help them. Once the children are familiar with the structure of a limerick, they can use the template page to start to make up their own limericks. Notes: Limericks are traditionally 5 lines and often with a funny final line or a twist. The first, second and last line usually have the same rhyme and the third and fourth often share a different rhyme.

A set of 5 pages of colour flashcards related to the lovely story by John Burningham ‘The Shopping Basket’. Most images are symbols with some pictures. Flashcards include the animals in the story, the food on the shopping list, characters and ordinal numbers. These cards can be used in a range of ways such as matching up the animals with the foods, sequencing the story, ordering the numbers - the cards can also enhance any display work. This is an animated PPT with 2 activity sheets as a follow up. Jo wants a new dog and is viewing them on ‘Zoom’! There are 20 dogs to choose from. Children watch the PPT and help Jo to decide on a dog they feel would be suitable. The slides are animated so the children will delight in watching the dogs on the TV, There are lots of details too on the slides for children to talk about and spot in the other slides. Some of these are animated also. The activity sheets are at the back: A writing frame for children to write their choice for Jo and their personal choice. They then draw these dogs.
