CURRENT WEEK The News Quiz 11th - 18th October 2021 Form Tutor Time Current Affairs

2021 school year continues with a variety of stories from around the world! What a week once again - England v Hungary, tv crossovers, Greatest Hits at number one, oldest sci-fi icon in space record, walking stick first, gangster sale, superheroes walk the streets, £305 million takeover, robots walk among us, food championships, music video controversy and Manchester icon gets degree! What does 2021-2022 school year hold in store for us all? There’s only one way to find out - in the NEEEEEEWWWWSSS QUUUUUUUIIIIIZZZ! :) New quiz uploaded each week of the term, ALL YEAR LONG! More than ten years and still going strong :) Many thanks to everyone who downloads this, it is very much appreciated and I’m glad it is useful for your form groups! 13 topical questions of the past week’s news, across the UK and the world. Designed to be used as a 10-20 minute activity in formtime - you could make it a little longer by talking about and discussing some of the questions. ANY MIS-SPELLINGS/MISSING CAPITALS ETC. IN THE PREVIEW ARE INTENTIONAL AND LINK TO THE LITERACY QUESTIONS IN THE REST OF THE QUIZ! Powerpoint so can be used on a standard whiteboard. Includes 2 literacy and 1 numeracy questions based on the other questions. Works well as a form group activity in registration time - I give sweets to the winning team (we’re not supposed to give sweets out, so it’s a nice ‘naughty’ reward and makes (some of) them watch and check their apps about the news in the week. :) So glad to still be back and able to do this as a form in an actual classroom!

30 lessons – ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell – Year 4/5/6 – English planning

(3)
A whole term’s English planning linked to the book ‘The Explorer’ (Winner of the Children’s Book Prize Winner of the Costa Children’s Book Award 2017) by Katherine Rundell. Ideal for Year 4, Year 5 or Year 6 children. 30 lessons in total, all with SMART Notebook screens, task sheets and header sheets. There are a total of 143 SMART Notebook screens and each lesson is clearly marked along with which lesson each chapter should be read to aid and link to the learning. (Update - I have split the SMART Notebook screens over four files to reduce the size and make it easier to download.) (Update 21/10/2020 - In response to many requests, I have converted the SMART Notebook screens to Powerpoint, so there are also 174 Powerpoint presentation pages included for the teaching sequence across four files.) This planning includes: Writing a narrative Writing a persuasive letter SATs style comprehension questions Journal writing Writing an information text Recording a radio broadcast This book and planning link well with topic work on South America, Brazil, the Amazon rainforest and the Yanomami indigenious tribe. It will also educate and inform the children of a very current real problem that others in the world face - the destruction of the rainforest.
