AQA Unseen Poetry - Coronavirus

Two lessons focusing on question 1 of the unseen (AQA Section C) based on Nikita Gill’s poem ‘Love in the Time of Coronavirus’. I used these for remote learning but can also be used in normal lessons. Lesson 1: structured approach on how to approach & analyse an unseen poem and plan an answer. Lesson 2: step-by-step how-to detailing how to turn the plan from the previous lesson into an essay response. There are teacher models, sentence starters & criteria for each step. It also contains a learning mat that could be used for other lessons. There are also poems that could be compared to the original poem to help structure a lesson for Q2 but I haven’t planned this fully myself yet.

Poems for Children of the Coronavirus Era

(0)
This is a collection of seven modern, original poems written about children’s experiences during the pandemic this year. Poem titles/topics are: NHS Clap for carers What did you do during lockdown Assembly Bubbles Washing hands Lessons All poems rhyme and offer reflections on children’s experiences during and since lockdown, including changes that have occurred in their day-to-day school lives compared to before lockdown. They could be studied as part of a unit on poetry or as part of the recovery curriculum as it provides plenty of stimuli for children to discuss, compare and empathise with their own feelings and experiences of living with the coronavirus pandemic. (NB Topics of death and bereavement are not discussed here.) Suitable for Key Stage 2 and possibly KS3. If you find this resource useful, I’d be grateful if you would spend a few moments to give a review. Many thanks.

How Coronavirus Stole Christmas (NOT!!)

(0)
An easy to use Christmas performance/(virtual)assembly idea that includes POSITIVE messages for students. Ideal for video performances/virtual assemblies for students aged 9 and up. While Christmas is referenced, general ideas and activities that are not Christmas-specific are mentioned. It’s an inclusive assembly. Involves all the students of a class and no need for memorization. Some creativity - creating letters on card to be held up in the assembly. Costumes unnecessary but students could wear festive clothing/colours. During COVID restrictions, assemblies are almost certainly not happening. This skit would be perfect for a video-recorded performance - Individual students could record their lines physically distanced from the cameraperson. Even ‘group’ lines should be delivered while students are physically distanced.
