The Somerset Levels Floods: 2014

(0)
AQA GCSE Geography lesson for the new specification Unit 1A: In this lesson we look at the causes, effects of and responses to the Somerset Levels floods of 2014. The lesson has a multiple choice retrieval practice starter. We firstly introduce the location of the Somerset Levels and the pupils consider why the area may be prone to flooding, this could be just a discussion or they could annotate the map. They use sentence fragments to write a description of the location. We then look at the causes of the floods, for this the students complete a cloze exercise and highlight long and short term causes. There is a video clip to watch on what happened during the floods. The students then create a map to show the extent of the floods by colouring by numbers on a worksheet. They then look at the impacts and categorise them into social, economic and environmental. We then briefly look at dredging with an optional video clip before the students sort the responses out into immediate and long-term responses on a worksheet. We finish with a GCSE-style practice question with some guidance and structure provided for the students, there is also marking guidance provided. Hope this saves you some valuable planning time. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/markthegeographer

The five deadly features of a volcanic eruption - KS2

(1)
This lesson is designed for KS2 students. It can be taught as a stand alone lesson but is also available as part of two wider units, both of which are available on TES: -Volcanoes -Volcanoes & Earthquakes The presentation investigates the five deadly features of a volcanic eruption including volcanic ash, lava flows, volcanic bombs, pyroclastic flows and mud flows (or ‘lahars’). The activity challenges students to match pictures of each feature to a description. It is differentiated four ways: Easier – Students match pictures of the five features of a volcanic eruption to the descriptions. Medium – Students complete cloze procedure sentences. They then match pictures to each description. Harder – Students complete cloze procedure sentences. They then match pictures to each description and add a title for each section. Hardest – Children stick pictures of the five features of a volcanic eruption in their books and write their own description next to each one. Extension – Which feature of a volcanic eruption do children think is the most deadly? Can they explain their answer? If you like this resource, we would appreciate a review! Rivers & Water Class Assembly script

(0)
This class assembly was written for Year 6 but could easily be used in lower years. The script takes around 20 minutes to perform and has enough parts for any sized group. There are lots of speaking roles that can be shared or added to and plenty of non-speaking parts as well. The first scene opens with people around the world discovering all the water on earth is gone. It leads to news reporters following the story around the world to various famous rivers (including Amazon, Nile, Ganges, Yangtze, Mississippi and Mekong). We hear about some of the current environmental issues at each site including pollution and the effect on ecosystems and food chains, urbanization and soil erosion, global warming and flooding, animal extinction, over population, deforestation, rain forest destruction, People finally come and demand their water back but the rivers ask for certain promises from the humans. The play offers suggestions for 'viewers' to help out our environment in general. There is a very effective demonstration of water waste from leaving taps on while brushing teeth that leaves the audience thinking about their actions. **Please note this is a PDF file, so cannot be edited. It is double spaced so that character roles can be written in by hand or amendments can be made on paper. We also offer a fully editable version in a word document. Please visit our shop to find it!** We hope you enjoy!
