Back to School: Secondary Science

(0)
This is a back to school activity for science teachers to use when setting out expectations for the term ahead. The worksheet can be used with a brand new class after the summer holidays, or with a class returning to you after a shorter school break. The aim of the sheet is to help facilitate a good start to a new term- in both behaviour and effort. This activity is designed to be accompanied by teacher- led discussion. The sheet asks students to consider class rules and what makes a good science lesson. There is opportunity to introduce some paired discussion at this point if you wish. Students are asked to reflect on their work from the previous term, such as before the summer holiday or even from a previous school, and then asked to consider what they could change, keep the same or keep a measure of in order to progress further. The sheet is set out in headings following the scientific method and therefore also reminds students of the meanings of terms such as independent variable, dependent variable and control variable. The conclusion section at the end of the sheet is left open- ended. Teachers could ask students to state what they have found out about themselves, state what they are looking forward to this term, or ask a question of their teacher, for example. Please feel free to edit to suit your own needs.

The resources in this bundle cover a variety of subjects and engage students in activities that help them make the leap from vacation to education by allowing them to move about and explore a variety of subjects as they get acclimated to school again or for the first time with the youngest students. There are games based on fairy tales characters and Pokemon Go, for example that will help students who've been out of a classroom all summer to gradually adjust to school climate. There are also mechanisms embedded that allow teachers to get information about how students think, their preferences, their learning styles, and their interests. One resource gives teachers a way to establish a relationship with both students and parents while learning about the needs of each student. Since activitities are coupled with instruction, these resources will help with the transition from having fun playing games to learning while playing fun games.

Back to School! Safety in the Science Lab Presentation GCSE

(0)
September is here and we’re heading back to the labs for another exciting year of Science teaching! But before we can get started with combustion, evaporation or even fireworks we need to ensure the safety of our classes and their use of a Bunsen burner. In this presentation we focus on: The importance of rules in the science lab. The difference between hazards and risks. How to write a risk assessment. The parts of the Bunsen burner. How to use a Bunsen burner (we often use this lesson to make s’mores and again think about the rule of eating and drinking in the lab). This presentation is aimed at Edexcel GCSE Sciences but could be adapted for younger year groups and other exam boards with ease. LEARNING OBJECTIVE Can I recall how to use the laboratory with confidence and professionalism? Subject content covered: 1.e. Evaluate risks both in practical science and the wider societal context, including perception of risk in relation to data and consequences. Safe use of appropriate heating devices and techniques, including use of a Bunsen burner. The presentation also comes with the resources needed to help students that may need a little support with drawing tables of information. All the best for your new year in the lab! I do not own any of the images in this presentation. Thanks Google!
