This resource is a 30 question European Day of Languages quiz created on Microsoft Powerpoint suitable for KS3 and KS4 secondary students.
Celebrate European Day of Languages on 26th September with your classes or tutor groups with this 30 question quiz themed around the event complete with answers.
There are 30 questions in this quiz varying from multiple choice general knowledge, True/False statements, multiple choice flags and matching the greetings with the correct language. The answers are then to be shared as a class by going through each question (ensure you are in present mode for the correct answer to colour green) for students to peer or self mark. *Additionally, answers are in the notes section on each slide. *
I would recommend for this quiz students get into groups of no more than 4 and the activity should take no longer than 20 minutes to complete.
Please keep an eye out for my weekly tutor time quizzes which are 20 question quizzes created in a similar fashion and review/leave feedback if possible.

Thursday 26th September 2024 is the European Day of Languages!
This is an assembly that has been prepared to let children know this, and to encourage them to reflect on why there is a special day for languages. It would work well as an introduction to a whole day of European language themed small activities e.g. the lunch menu in other languages/teachers greeting you in other languages.
There are opportunities to iterate to children that, even though we are leaving the EU, we are part of Europe, and will still be part of Europe when we leave (Not overtly mentioned - this could be held as a discussion on the ‘Europe’ slides.)
It links to what I have called in the presentation ‘British Values’ (but for my school we talk of Core Values) and prompts children to reflect on how learning about another person’s language and culture can link to values such as tolerance.
There are links to a clip, where children have to listen for the French speaker saying ‘hello- talk to me’ - as we teach French in our school (simply amend the photo and listen for the language(s) that you teach if it is not French).
Later on there are some fun activities, in French, which are appropriate if you do or do not teach French, as ideally, throughout the school day, you would incorporate ways to engage with the other languages spoken in Europe (e.g. am register in Italian, pm register in Spanish - I have chosen French as we teach it in our school and it needs a ‘push/plug’.
The material is designed to fill approximately 20 minutes assembly time. If I had more time to fill, I would show one of the excellent French language short animations afterwards, such as Du Tout Cuit
I hope you find this resource helpful.

Ideal for European Day of Languages or as a multi-language activity to demonstrate links between languages.
A fun resource for pupils to discover links between languages whilst solving the mystery. Activities cover transport vocabulary in a variety of languages, exploring departure boards, categorising languages into language families, matching country names and an odd-one-out quiz to discover the final destination. Pupils are asked to find clues in order to help their neighbour find his brother who is somewhere in Europe. Pupils are given a scenario and a bucket list of possible locations. They then work through the activities to find clues which allow them to eliminate locations and ultimately find the destination.
Some research is involved in translating vocabulary from various languages so I would recommend having devices on hand to help students.
A teacher guide with instructions and answers is included, which would make the mystery an ideal cover lesson.
Includes:
Bucket list, pupil instructions and 5 activities
Extension task: word search for early finishers
Teacher guide complete with instructions and answers.
FOLLOWING FEEDBACK, VIDEO LINKS ARE NOW ADDED TO THE SLIDES FOOTNOTES. First time posting but I hope you trust the description and download, I believe this will help you.
This PPt is worth 30mins of Assembly time. Last year I enlisted my language leaders to help me deliver the slides, one each on repeat. This helps the students to overcome stage fright and improve public speaking. All you will need to do is to introduce the Assembly and manage/trust your language leaders to deliver the rest.
This PPt is great for your European day of Languages Assembly with footnotes with instructions for every slide. Your audience will be engaged and it will participate answering some multiple choice questions - students could be rewarded with positive points or a sweet on the spot, if the answer the question correctly.
Besides engaging your audience with questions, you will provide them with interesting facts and there are also links to videos thought the ppt that will explain how languages shape our thoughts and will keep your audience attentive and engaged until the end, hopefully encouraging students to take a language for their choice of GCSE.
I have made this assembly using lots of other people's ideas who have kindly put their EDL resources on here so thank you!
Just added a few other bits to make it hopefully funny and relevant for year 9 but it could be adapted for any year group.
Here are the YouTube links to 3 of the 4 videos, can&'t find the 4th!

I have created 5 minute starter activities for a range of subjects across the curriculum in order to celebrate European Day of Languages. Each starter activity links that particular subject with languages. Each starter either involves a quick activity such as a match up task or it is a “did you know?” style information slide linking the subject to languages. The PowerPoint slides indicate which subject they refer to in the top left hand corner and there are instructions/answers underneath each slide. The idea is to make the activity as accessible and as easy as possible for other staff members to use so that they are inclined to include them in their lessons. I have sent the PowerPoint to all teaching staff in the hope that they will use them in order to support the languages department in celebrating the European Day of Languages. If successful then it will mean that the students have some exposure to language learning in all of their lessons throughout the day.
The subjects that I have included are:
Maths (x2)
English (x3)
Science (x2)
Languages (x2)
Geography (x2)
History
Religious Studies
Physical Education (x2)
Food Technology
Textiles Technology
Media Studies
Drama (x2)
Art
Psychology (x2)
Health and Social Care
Business Studies
Music
Law
Government & Politics
