Complete KS3 SOW - Adventurers and Explorers

(0)
This SOW is a fun way to introduce non-fiction reading to students with little experience of it. It uses extracts from non-fiction travel writing from explorers from a diverse background and uses places from across the world to teach reading and writing skills. Loosely following Nellie Bly’s trip around the world in 72 days, this scheme of work should: encourage students to engage with a global perspective on literature; allow students to engage with explorers from diverse backgrounds; teach students valuable reading and writing skills. It also has a homework scheme attached that builds up to presentations at the end. Lessons 1-15: Non-fiction reading building up inference skills. Lessons 16-28: Travel writing with description. Lessons 29-32: Preparation for End of Year Assessment. Extract Booklet is available for free here: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/adventurers-and-explorers-extract-booklet-12227816

Reading Comprehension: Sherlock Holmes in the Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

(0)
Who better to show the usefulness of a well-asked question - and the importance of a clear and concise answer - than Sherlock Holmes? In ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle’, Holmes’ great detective skills and Watson’s faithful support of his friend are at their most admirable. The disappearance of the famous blue jewel is easily explained . . . or is it? Set at Christmastime in old London, Holmes solves this case with his usual flair - and also, perhaps, saves a man from a life of crime. For young readers who are ready for their first Sherlock Holmes mystery (but who would rather not read about murders or ghosts), this is an excellent tale to start with! Contents: • The full, original tale of ‘The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle’, divided into ten short sections Following each section: o Five questions to be answered separately in a student’s notebook o Vocabulary, in alphabetical order, with definitions or synonyms (making the word comprehensible in the story’s context), from the chapter just read o A ‘looking up close’ page, exploring one main theme of the section just read, such as hats of the time period, how people lit their homes, the difference between supper and dinner, what betting is, keeping warm in old London, etc. (with pictures) Directions: • Read one section of the book at a time. Use the vocabulary list to help with understanding the story (and practise looking things up in alphabetical order). Answer the questions in a separate notebook. Read the ‘looking up close’ page for fun. Enjoy a good, old-fashioned, Sherlock Holmes mystery! Bonus! Includes a set of notebooking pages that can be used to answer questions, write out vocabulary, or in any other way you see fit!

Adventure and Exploration Scheme of Work

This is a fully resourced scheme of work adapting resources from variety of freely shared sources. The majority of resources were adapted from AllyUganda's fantastic Adventure and Exploration SoW - https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/sow-geography-and-adventure-6434814 I am sharing these lessons and resources to help others with their planning. Learning Matrix - I currently use these to record student progress over the term. Students put them in the front of their books and the criteria is highlighted yellow as they achieve it. If I'd like them to try and do a particular criteria it is highlighted pink, once achieved it is ticked off. Set 1 completed the SoW as a project, they used the learning matrix as a guide and provided feedback to one another at the end of the term using the project feedback sheet.

Exploration and Adventure Need to Know Learning Matrix

(0)
Need to Know Learning Matrix I use these to assess student understanding and progress through the term and to provide quality feedback without the need for excessive comment writing. I simply put the matrix in the front of the students book, every time I mark their books I highlight the relevant criteria in one colour (usually yellow) and criteria I would like them to attempt in DIRT in another (usually pink). Once the criteria to attempt is achieved I simply tick it off on the matrix. In their books I will write WWW and list the codes for the criteria achieved. I will then draw steps to indicate how to level up and write the corresponding codes of criteria I want them to attempt. The Need to Know questions are based on the lessons & learning objectives over the term, which are also used to create the coded success criteria. I find this technique reduces the time I spend marking books however allows me to provide quality feedback and to clearly see progress over the term. It's great for outline the SoW and encouraging independent learning. Hope it's of use.

2 week unit of planning for descriptive writing based on The Great Explorer by Chris Judge

(3)
This is a Year 2 resource. Two weeks of detailed lesson plans plus smartboards for eight lessons where smartboards are required. There is a link in the planning to an online reading of the book. This is a great way for year 2 children to include adjectives and adverbs in their descriptive writing. There is also a link to a video clip of The Northern Lights to inspire the children. The activities are differentiated either by a worksheet or by differentiated expecttations set out as success criteria. I have successfully used this unit of literacy to link to our history topic on Explorers from the past including Christopher Columbus. The story of the Great Explorer follows the adventures of a child who sets off to the North Pole to rescue his Dad. Follow up work on a news report and information writing to follow.
