This booklet has 11 extracts from the 19th/20th/21st century. It has been designed to compliment teaching of GCSE skills at KS3, but could be easily used at GCSE as well.
It includes challenge activities for each extract which compliments the work done in the normal lessons and SOW.

This SOW is a fun way to introduce non-fiction reading to students with little experience of it. It uses extracts from non-fiction travel writing from explorers from a diverse background and uses places from across the world to teach reading and writing skills.
Loosely following Nellie Bly’s trip around the world in 72 days, this scheme of work should: encourage students to engage with a global perspective on literature; allow students to engage with explorers from diverse backgrounds; teach students valuable reading and writing skills.
It also has a homework scheme attached that builds up to presentations at the end.
Lessons 1-15: Non-fiction reading building up inference skills.
Lessons 16-28: Travel writing with description.
Lessons 29-32: Preparation for End of Year Assessment.

This SOW has been designed to support KS3 students in the transition to GCSE work. It has 26 complete lessons which build both reading and writing skills. It revolves around Victorian England and includes extracts from Dickens’ non-fiction writing to compliment an understanding of Victorian England at GCSE.
