This Reception Vocabulary Progression Document provides a clear, structured overview of vocabulary development across all areas of the EYFS, mapped out across the full academic year. Vocabulary is carefully sequenced term-by-term, ensuring children are exposed to and build upon key language in Communication and Language, PSED, Physical Development, Literacy, Maths, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design. This supports a language-rich curriculum where vocabulary is explicitly taught, revisited and embedded across continuous provision and adult-led learning. The document is ideal for supporting Ofsted expectations, clearly demonstrating intentional curriculum design, progression and a strong focus on language development. It is also a valuable tool for EYFS Leads, providing clear evidence of how vocabulary is planned, taught and built over time across the setting.

EAL Vocabulary helps children with very little English to increase their vocabulary and to learn the basic words they need in their everyday lives. The themes covered are clothes, mealtimes and things in the classroom. The words used are those suggested to us by EAL and EFL teachers. In addition to the worksheets, there are a number of coloured game sheets which can be used for many language games. Previously available through Easylearn.

Gothic vocabulary - In Gothic writing vocabulary can be quite tricky, but this lesson supports students in improving their use of vocabulary when creating narrative pieces. Students are provided with detailed lists of synonyms for adjectives, verbs and adverbs, all with a Gothic-style focus. Students use these lists to reflect on previous pieces of writing and make changes. A useful lesson for both KS3 and KS4 students, including those working on texts such as Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. This PowerPoint slide is the nineteenth in a series of 31 resources to introduce pupils to vocabulary learning and spotting patterns. This activity encourages pupils to watch carefully as different items flash once and then disappear. Pupils should be encouraged to give an answer using ‘es’ (it is) and the ‘un/una’ indefinite article. Audio embedded, notes at bottom of slide.

If used in primary it is more for higher ability in years 5 and 6 as it was originally meant for a challenging quiz competition. Includes grammar such as oxymorons, superlatives, collective nouns, homophones, synonyms etc.
