Geography: Why are Volcanoes so Hazardous? (Edexcel B, Tectonics) This Unit follows the Edexcel B syllabus but has been design to be part of a three year GCSE course. As a result this could be delivered at both KS3 and KS4. This unit is created in line with my personal passion for tectonic hazards in the developing world. This Unit is my favorite to deliver and has been streamlined over the last two years. This SoW work has been differentiated, with with both support and challenge throughout. Retrieval Practice and Duel Coding Theory are incorporated and as well as regular links to other parts of the syllabus, this is in line to my recent academic readings. Geographical and numeracy skill have been planned for. Happy to answer questions and any feedback welcome… jacobspong@gmail.com SoW: L1: How do volcanoes form? L2: Why do people live near volcanoes? L3: What threats are presented by volcanoes? L4: How can humans respond to their threat? L5: How do developed countries respond to volcanoes? L6: Case Study Yellowstone Super Volcano. This lesson is designed to last for 50-60 minutes and is resourced with videos, extension questioning, deep thinking and uses graphs/images to aid learning. This lesson follows the Oxford KS3 curriculum and looks at firstly the structure of a volcano where students will be required to label a drawing with the magma chamber, volcanic bombs, vents and others. Students will then move on to the two types of volcanoes; shield and composite. They will be required to identify features and then engage in a sorting task. Finally, students will look and both positive and negative impacts of volcanoes. This lesson includes a starter, lesson objective, plenary and various student led activities. Locating the world's famous volcanoes - KS2

(4)
This lesson is designed for KS2 students. It can be taught as a stand alone lesson but is also available as part of two wider units, both of which are available on TES: -Volcanoes -Volcanoes & Earthquakes First the presentation introduces some of the world’s most famous volcanoes and classes them as active, dormant or extinct. The activity then challenges students to locate volcanoes using an atlas or the internet (e.g. Google maps). Alternatively, a map of famous world volcanoes is also provided. Easier – Students locate volcanoes using the map of famous volcanoes (writing numbers). Medium – Students locate volcanoes using the map of famous volcanoes (writing volcano names). Harder – Students locate volcanoes using an atlas. (N.B. It is recommended you check the atlas has the relevant maps prior doing the activity.) Tectonic Hazards: The Distribution of Earthquakes and Volcanoes

AQA GCSE Geography lesson for Unti 1A: The Challenge of Natural Hazards. there is a retrieval practice starter grid which will just need filling out by the teacher with appropriate questions. Pupils begin by looking at the location of earthquakes and volcanoes by plotting their location on a map using longitude and latitude. Pupils then describe the pattern using T.E.A (trend, examples, anomaly). We then look at the plates and margins. The pupils use description of the plates locations to work out where they are then descriptions of their movements to draw on arrows of the plates direction of travel. We examine the link between the locations and plate margins and briefly explain the anomalies by looking at hotspot volcanoes. We then tackle a GCSE-style question with guidance for the pupils if needed. In a nutshell lesson includes: Retrieval practice starter Longitude and latitude skills task plotting tectonic hazards Map task using descriptions of plate locations and movements Hotspot diagram drawing GCSE-style question with guidance. Hope this saves you valuable planning time. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/markthegeographer

Volcanoes Workbook

This workbook and case sudies is designed to meet the majority of the requirements of the AQA Geography Entry Level - I think just the case study is missing. The tasks are short and designed for pupils with limited attention span and lower than age expected reading skills. Some of the work has been adapted from other worksheets available on TES to fit the spec and learning outcomes of Entry Level.

What is a volcano? Volcanoes around the world.

(0)
This collection of activity sheets first considers how a volcano is formed, labelling the parts of a volcano and focusing on tier 3 technical vocabulary. (I did this after showing a powerpoint on volcanoes as well as some video clips of volcanoes erupting/timelapse lava flow). Then locate some major volcanoes around the world using the given map and accompanying sheet (alongside ipads/laptops for internet use and atlases with world maps/maps of continents). NB: The first 6 minutes 45 seconds of the BBC programme ‘Africa with Ade Adepitan’ is fantastic for that wow factor and introducing the idea of volcanoes around the world. It even includes a scene showing where volcanic rock has burst through the walls of someone’s house! Tip: Mount Etna is in Sicily, but Sicily is an autonomous region of Italy.
