Human body organs

This resource is great for students of all ages to recognise organs within the human body. Pupils are given an empty diagram of the human body and are required to label the key organs; once the organs have been labelled and students can then colour each part of the human body using the matching key. In order to extend learning students can either use their own knowledge or research why certain organs are important and the functions within the body.

Designed and written for a PMLD group this Sensory Story can be easily adapted for EYFS and even Key Stage 1 settings. As I am lucky enough to have access to a multi-sensory room there is a video on youtube that depending on your reading speed will act as a background to your story making it more immersive. You could even play this on an interactive whiteboard. The Story is included as an easily printed PDF with an image for each page. This means any independent readers can read along.

The Human Body's Defence Systems

A highly engaging lesson that looks at the structures that are found in the 1st line of defence and explores the methods of action use by phagocytes and lymphocytes. This lesson has been designed for GCSE students but could be used as an initial recap with A-level students before they go on to learn this topic in greater detail The lesson begins by introducing the meaning of the 1st line of defence. A quick competition is used to challenge the students to recognise the names of some of these structures when their names have some letters missing. Time is taken to discuss the action of the cilia and skin and then students are challenged to make links to the related topics of enzymes and pH as they complete a passage about the role of hydrochloric acid in the stomach. Moving forwards, students will learn that there are two types of white blood cells, phagocytes and lymphocytes, and the details of their actions is explored. Key points such as the specificity of antibodies and the involvement of enzymes are discussed in detail so that this topic can be understood to the depth needed at this level. In addition to a number of games to maintain engagement, progress checks are written into this at regular intervals to allow the students to assess their understanding.

Workbook collated and designed to support investigation into major body organs and how to keep them healthy. Website has cartoons etc to explain functions and labelling of organs. Recommend this book for finishing activities/differentiation - My First Human Body Book by Patricia J. Wynne - a US book so check spellings when you use it. It's a colouring book but with useful explanatory text and the children enjoyed the style/layout.

Human Body Skeleton Interactive Display

(4)
**Update: I have recently changed the skeleton file as some people fed-back that it wasn’t printing as it should as a Publisher file. It is now an A4 PDF file, but can be enlarged to A3 in order to get the same size of skeleton that I used on my display (or it could be scaled down to A5 for cute mini skeletons!) This interactive display invites the pupils to arrange the skeleton and label each bone correctly. I enlarged the skeleton, cut out each bone, laminated it and then stuck a bit of blu-tac to the back; however, if you are lucky enough to have a skeleton in school you could just label that! The display also includes questions and answers about the skeleton and bones and fun facts. I have included a picture of the finished display once it was moved to the school corridor (and, therefore, wasn’t being used interactively any more). I have changed the font to Comic Sans as the one I used isn’t often installed as standard, but each file is provided in Word as well as PDF so you can fiddle with the font and wording.
