Murder Mystery Investigation!

(5)
There's been a murder! This exciting, engaging investigation activity allows students to control the direction of their own learning, through speaking, listening, discussing, and reasoning. I initially created these resources to provide something interesting for the students to engage with for their Functional Skills Speaking and Listening discussions, but it has since been used across Citizenship and PSHE departments, as well as by form groups, as a catalyst for social and moral discussions. Students play detectives aiming to solve the case of a death of an old lady. Using a range of evidence, from video clips, to interviews with key suspects, to positioning events on maps, students work in teams to try and solve the case. They must use skills of communication, to decide which leads to prioritise, and which evidence to discount. They also need to use their skills of literacy, to read and understand key evidence, and skills of numeracy to ensure that they keep their case within budget! Included in this resource pack are: - Full PowerPoint lesson talking students through the case; - A range of 'Exhibits' - evidence that the students use to build a case, including video clips; - A map of the local area, to help visualise the events leading up to the death; - Budgetting and recording sheets to track their progress; - A prime supsects list; - Clue cards containing interviews with prime supsects; - Full teacher guidance. Considering the time and effort that it took to create these resources, I think that they offer exceptional value. Whenever I have used this activity before, it has taken at least 2-3 lessons, including the introduction, investigation, conclusions, and evaluation. I orignally have used this with lower ability Year 8,9, and 10 groups, but colleagues have adapted it easily for students of all key stages. All images have been cited at the end of the PowerPoint presentation and are licensed for commercial use.

Halloween Murder Mystery Game

A murder was committed last night during a Halloween party. As the highest-ranking crime detective, you must solve the crime and find out who the murderer is. You have the names and details of 32 suspects who were at the party when the crime took place. The murderer is one of them. There were five witnesses to the murder. Each witness has left you a clue. The clues have been given in code so that only you, with your amazing code‐breaking skills, will be able to crack them and solve the crime. You can decode the clues in any order you wish. Every time you solve a clue you can eliminate some suspects. Each clue will remove half of the suspects from the list, until you are left with just one… Who is the murderer? Game Play The murder mystery takes approximately 30 minutes based on players’ experience, skill, age and group size. Extra Ideas For groups or pupils who solve the mystery quicker than others why not have them write a secret message of their own for their classmates to decode. You could have some keys printed out for them to use (e.g. Morse code, pig pen cipher, braille, semaphore etc… these are easily found with a quick web search) You could suggest they hide a message in a passage of text (e.g. have their message in capitals or back words letters with in text) or for it to be read left to right. They could design their own code / create symbols for each letter of the alphabet and use it to wrote a secret message.

SPAG Murder Mystery!

(0)
This is a great resource I have used with my Year 5 group, but would work well as SAT’s revision or as individual teaching elements in LKS2 or as a recap of skills in KS3. The Murder Mystery consists of five challenges based on five different SPAG areas. The children must follow the instructions on each challenge to find a clue. Each clue helps to eliminate people from the suspect list. A notebook file is included with examples of each style of challenge in order to check understanding before the children begin each task. The task begins with a story about a murder in a sleepy village and asks the children to help solve the case. Included in this set of resources is: Instructions for the teacher. A story introducing the event. The suspect list. Five clues** (with all of the answers). ** A self-assessment tool to use at the end of the unit of work. A bright, colourful Notebook file which guides through each challenge and includes examples. A lesson plan. SPAG skills covered by this resource include: Clue 1: Full stops and Capital Letters. Clue 2: Nouns, Adjectives and Verbs. Clue 2: Commas Clue 4: Subordinating and Co-ordinating conjunctions. Clue 5: Speech Punctuation. This works brilliantly in mixed ability groups or by individual groups of pupils. Higher ability pupils relish the challenge of investigating for themselves whereas some lower ability or SEN children will need support. It can be used across one (or a series of) lessons or as a weekly starter/plenary/SPAG task which can extend the ‘whodunit’ tension across an entire half term.
