Screen printing
Sublimation printing
Block printing
Tie dye
Silk painting
Batik
Appliqué
Patchwork
Weaving
Hand/Machine/Creative embroidery
Fabric manipulation (Gathering, pleating, quilting, slashing, distressing)
Most pages include a few different versions of the technique, step-by-steps, images, inspirational examples and extensions/challenges. Helpful for GCSE Design Technology with a textiles specialism or for Art Textiles courses.
I have moved from AQA DT Textiles to Art Textiles ( OCR) I produced this guide for students ( and myself as I found the course very open compared to the DT version I am used to!) they work through it and tick off elements as they go in each section. It is divided into the 4 sections of the exam board ( Research, development, practical, evaluation) and each page can also be used as objectives on the board for the teacher, which links well to the booklet.
I also have a project 2 portfolio ( very similar you may not need both) but includes topics from previous examination papers and two booklets for year 9 to access which is a watered down/ easier to access version of this booklet. Please do have a look at all and see which is the best fit for you!
A series of lessons aimed at Year 7 developing hand sewing skills with an introduction to printmaking. The project takes inspiration from Mark Hearld and gives oppurtunities to discuss different birds and the things that they symbolise.
I have developed this series of lessons with the plan that it will run over four lessons;
Lesson 1 - introduction to the project and print making. Make a paper printed bird using acrylic paint.
Lesson 2 - Print the fabric using odds and ends and fabric paints.
Lesson 3 - Start assembly - simple blanket stitch
Lesson 4 - Finish assembly
This was made in Google Slides so there might be some movement since it has been downloaded.
This simple textiles art project is ideal for teaching younger students as it is really short but engages students by giving them lots of choice in their work. Students love the bright colours, the different shaped stitches and, of course… the sweet, sugary subject!
Students learn basic hand stitches: running, back, chain, French knot and have the option to learn more if they can.
The outcomes are so fun and students loved using the felt tips on the fabric. The presentation includes lesson starter activities, plenaries, reflections etc. and breaks down the steps into really simple to follow instructions. There are links to appropriate artists and links to free handouts to use too.

A set of revision sheets to support the teaching of three different types of weaves in textiles:
Plain Weave
Twill Weave
Satin Weave
Each sheet contains an illustration of the layout of the weave along with several advantages and disadvantages of each. I use this resource to visually demonstrate this abstract topic at both GCSE and A level. I also find the sheets useful for pupils to take away as a revision guide.
I have attached my whole lesson for the technique of Batik. This technique can be done with both KS3 and KS4 students. I have attached the whole powerpoint that I use which has a Do Now activity, lesson objectives, a slide that has all of the equipment you will need listed and health and safety considerations. It also has 3 interesting videos on the application of Batik - you can choose which video is most exciting for your pupils. This powerpoint also has plenary questions at the end.
I have also included a worksheet that students can complete after they have finished experimenting with the Batik techique. On this worksheet there is a a box asking them to write down the equipment they used, H&S considerations, the method of the technique and then to reflect on their learning. They also have to consider the advantages and disadvantages of using the techniques.
Step by Step photo instructions for pupils to follow to make a reversible bucket hat, in the Lesson Powerpoint.
A skills building make for KS3 - KS4 - option to tye dye fabric to make the hat from [ slides 25-30 cover this in the lesson powerpoint.] Or it could be a recycling make using found fabrics; medium weight cottons will give the best finished result. The make links other parts of the specification together,;woven fabric construction, natural fibres and their properties, dye techniques, with joining and making.
Keywords highlighted in the step of making.
Glossary worksheets to develop Keyword attainment and to allow pupils to demonstrate their knowledge; AFL for teacher to assess individuals understanding. I have used these as starter activities to recall learning in the previous lesson. You could select the words they complete, or let them have free choice.
Skills building - Bucket Hat construction record, pupils to complete after each practical lesson to rag rate their outcome. Creating a step-by-step production record to support NEA KS4 work, where they state the steps of making and reflect on the techniques they could improve. This will help focus them on Quality Control outcomes in this and future makes.
Summative Assessment Sheet - linked to GCSE 1-9 making grade criteria. This could be self / peer / teacher assessment. Learning Objectives of techniques are listed, I use this to highlight areas not achieved so the pupil can see in ‘pupil speak’ what they could do to further develop their work.
The supporting worksheets are proven in my past pupils NEA to develop their skills to be able to be successful. The scaffolding of the sheets allows pupil to record their written content without it feeling like an onerous written task.
Knowlege Organiser - Editable if you don’t resist dye the tye dye fabric and need to change the keywords.
Powerpoints the text and images are editable.
All photographs are my own.
A physical paper pattern is not included in the resource - On SLIDE 2 in the LESSON POWERPOINT NOTES there is the LINK to the FREE DOWNLOAD BUCKET HAT PATTERN I used to make the hat in this resource. :-)
Please leave a review if you download - to support my development of future resources :-)
A comprehensive series of multimedia materials to support the teaching of the GCSE Design and Technology Textiles Technology course. The materials can be downloaded as a complete Moodle course or as individual elements. The bilingual resources include video clips, animations, text and quizzes within Moodle and can be used on an interactive whiteboard for whole class teaching or by students on individual computers. The images included in this work, to the best of our knowledge, are from sources that their use do not breach any copyright rules. Please visit the NGfL site, linked below.
A bundle of 9 Textiles cover lesson / extension worksheets designed to improve drawing and designing skills.
These are tried and tested worksheets that pupils will find engaging and challenging.
I created this presentation to integrate into my lesson based on moodboards. Learners had frequently found inspiration for creating moodboards however had difficulty understanding how they were created. This presentation breaks down the steps of fashion moodboards and gives timed exercises to help learners understand the process to creating unique, creative moodboards. I demonstrated to the class each of the exercises before allowing the learners to begin, this helped learners a lot too! Easily adaptable to breakdown creative work for learners.
