This ready-to-use PowerPoint is a full poetry comparison lesson for the Eduqas 2027 GCSE English Literature specification. Focusing on War Photographer and Disabled, it helps students write structured, high-level comparative essays on war poetry - ideal for Year 9 or early GCSE preparation for the new specification.
The lesson includes a scaffolded essay structure, guided analysis of context, structure, and language, and a model essay task with colour-coded highlighting. Activities support retrieval, annotations of the model essay and a sheet at the end to facilitate peer assessment. The model response is also included in the PowerPoint.
I created this because there are so few resources available for the new Eduqas anthology. This lesson can easily be adapted for other poems in the collection or for comparing unseen war poetry. Fully editable and classroom-tested, it’s designed to build comparison skills and analytical confidence.
KS3 - World War 1 Poetry Context lesson with a variety of activities and contextual information, examining propaganda in detail. Resources include: a timeline activity for key events in WW1, a diamond 9 activity for reasons why soldiers fought, examination of a number of propaganda posters from WW1 and a creative writing task.
A resource designed to support you and your students to use the National Theatre’s production of War Horse as a way into poetry of the First World War. The resource includes poems by Edward Thomas, Rupert Brooke and A. E. Housman. Developed in partnership with National Theatre Learning.
This bundle consists of 16 thoroughly planned lessons that take students through all 16 poems in the Edexcel IGCSE English Anthology.
List of poems covered:
‘If-’ by Rudyard Kipling
‘Prayer Before Birth’ by Louis MacNeice
‘Blessing’ by Imtiaz Dharker
‘Search for my Tongue’ by Sujata Bhatt
‘Half-past Two’ by U A Fanthorpe
‘Piano’ by D H Lawrence
‘Hide and Seek’ by Vernon Scannell
‘Sonnet 116’ by William Shakespeare
‘La Belle Dame sans Merci’ by John Keats
‘Poem at Thirty-Nine’ by Alice Walker

‘Remember’ by Christina Rossetti
Also included: a powerpoint outlining the way to structure a comparative essay, model answers and exam practice.
A detailed lesson on The Soldier by Rupert Brooke that explores attitudes before 1914 and how these changed as the First World War progressed. The lesson includes differentiated activities throughout, as well as detailed notes on the poem, a model paragraph, scaffolds, a range of engaging tasks to make war poetry relevant and interesting for students and more. Useful for Remembrance Day as well.
To help my A Level students, I created a useful guide with context, critics, historical information, a guide of literary terms and the poems they would need to analyse for their coursework. It includes information about the war and the poet, as well as influences and other poets linked to Owen. It also has copies of 11 of Owen’s poems for them to annotate so all of the information they need for their coursework is together.
War Poetry Annotated Rupert Brooke & Wilfred Owen
An ideal resource for English lessons in the approach to Remembrance Day.
This resource includes two iconic war poems - The Soldier and Dulce et Decorum Est.
For each poem, there is:
a blank copy where students can make their own annotations
a highlighted copy, which guides students towards sections they may want to focus on when annotating
a highlighted and annotated version -> this is an ideal teacher guide, or can be used by students to self-check what they identified
These variations make this a valuable resource that can be used with different ages/abilities. It is also helpful for non-specialists as key talking points are identified for each poem.
Also included is a comparison grid, which encourages students to think about key aspects of the poems. There is a blank version for students to complete and a teacher version, which includes some pointers for each aspect.
The Hero war poetry lesson that explores Siegfried Sassoon’s poem, looking at language and perspectives before moving to compare how the tone of this piece differs to others by Wilfred Owen, Thomas Hardy and other writers we have been studying. A very useful lesson for KS3 students and KS4 preparing for unseen poetry exams and English Literature exam questions too.
