‘War Photographer’ by Carol Ann Duffy and ‘Blessing’ by Imtiaz Dharker This is a colourful document in the form of a super clear grid that shows students how to compare the poems using the themes of strong images/ strong feelings/ challenging situations. The grid can easily be used to write about other themes from the poems. 5-6 short key quotations from each poem high-end language analysis tight comparison It is really useful for effective revision. I created this for a student who went on to get a grade 9 just using this (and others I have made) as her revision aid.

1) PowerPoint - This lesson focuses on teaching students about the context of World War One so that they have some frame of reference for approaching the poems written in this period. Afterwards, it explores how the perceptions of war in poetry changed during this period from patriotic beliefs in its valour to disillusionment as World War One saw a complete change in the way wars were fought and the attitudes towards them. This lesson opens with checking students prior knowledge of WW1. It then explains what the world was like during the 19th Century and the imperialist ideology. The beliefs of Europe’s’ Great Powers, the major causes of WW1, The assassination of Franz Ferdinand: A Shot that Changed the World, societal beliefs about war at the time, exploring propaganda posters from World War One, new technologies used in this war and the outcomes of the war. Two lesson focusing on how to structure a comparison between the poems War Photographer and Remains. Venn Diagrams, model answers and annotated quotations to support students. Easily adaptable for lower/higher ability groups.

This is an introduction to war poetry aimed at Year 7 students or low-ability Year 8. The aim of the lesson is to get the students thinking about the human cost of war, in preparation for looking at specific texts in later lessons. There are several activities, including a sorting task focused on numbers of dead, a sequence of photos to discuss, and a writing task pretending to be a soldier writing a letter home. The activity I found most powerful was the class poem creation, building up their own war poem out of word suggestions. At the start of the lesson the students came up with words like ‘fight’, ‘blood’, ‘cannon’. But when the exercise was repeated at the end they were suggesting words like ‘tired’, ‘homesick’, ‘scared’. They were amazed at their own creation. The lesson plan gives a brief outline of how to go through the lesson. The ‘What is War’ PPT takes you through the process, and the ‘World War 1 images and music’ PPT (which I found somewhere - maybe on TES) is a separate piece to play through in the main section of the lesson. I suggest using the slideshow mode (f5) so that the music and animations all play automatically.
