Included in this package are 24 tasks cards each with 2 spot the mistake tasks to engage, enrich and extend understanding of formal written division methods in Year 5 & 6 for short and long division.
8 calculations for each method, 2 on each sheet. Each calculation has an error – wrong division/multiplication fact, incorrect subtraction, remainders not written with the answer etc. Students can identify what is the error, explain clearly the mistake and suggest advice as if they were the teacher. Finally the correct calculation can be written.
The methods are: SHORT DIVISION
- HTU ÷ U remainders as a number
- HTU ÷ U remainders as a fraction
- HTU ÷ U remainders as a decimal LONG DIVISION
- HTU ÷ TU remainders as a number
- HTU ÷ TU remainders as a fraction
- HTU ÷ TU remainders as a decimal
This activity relates to NC Mathematics Programme of Study: Year 5: Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context
Year 6: Divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context
