Harry Potter teaching ideas and resources

some note, lessons plans and resources for the teaching of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban suitable for KS2 and can possibly be adapted for older age ranges! These are not perfect by any streach of the imagination but the ideas are there and the resources are good - i know i’ve used them to secure a job! i get the children to use concept map books to write notes down in a spider diagram whilst i am reading, that way they have key words and descriptions which will aid their writing! ok so here goes chapter 1 owl post - p.9 the wizards guide to using a muggle telephone, instructional writing p.14 letter writing writing thank you letter replies to either hagrid, hermione or ron…possibly set up an owl post box in your classroom and post them, children can then pick someones letter to read at the end of the lesson. chapter 2 - p.26 write a diary account from the perspective of aunt marge/the dursleys explaining the events of chapter 2, discuss feelings of the characters and letter writing formats. chapter 3 - p.33 newspaper writing, discussing the missing prisoner or wanted poster describing the prisoner and draw from the description. chapter 4 - p.43 advert writing looking at persuasive language used in describing the firebolt. make an advert for a wizarding object and try and present and sell it to the class which one was the best why? chapter 5 - p.59/p65. character profies of professor lupin/ a dementor in the style of a top trumps card, what powers do they have, what do they look like, how do they act etc? chapter 6 - no particular page - poetry writing focussed on spells and how to make them or instructional writing on how to make your own potion good website www.harrypotterfans.com look at the spellmaker it focusses on nouns, adjectives, and adverbs etc in a spellmaking interactive activity good for introductions or work for SEN children. chapter 7 - circle time type lesson on fears and how to face them or even a creative writing piece on fears - some parts of this lesson went well but there wasn’t enough to do and it could do with a bit of a kick!! chapter 14 - p.211 - aparecium spell (invisibility spell - used for the marauders map) fun lesson with a bit of an art/science twist making secret messages using invisible ink/lemon mix or wax crayon and paint there are a few mixtures u could use! links also with geography in the marauders map i did some work on co-ordinates and map reading etc the children drew maps of how they thought hogwarts would look…they had difficulty with birds eye views so u need to show them lots of examples! chapter 15 - p.215 argue cases for and against the execution of the hippogriff well there’s a few ideas and resources for u…some of the plans are crap i do warn u i copied and pasted a lot of them after i lost the will to live during the PGCE!!! hope this is useful let me know!it’s good to know that other people are getting use out of these! Topics also inlcuded: well known authors and books.
