NUMERACY: The 10's Challenge - Making 10 - CCSS K.CC.A.3, K.OA.A.3, K.OA.A.4, 1.OA.A.1, 1.OA.D.8
Your kids will LUV this challenge! I spread it out over 2 days during my mini-lessons in math workshop and for "math by myself". (Copy the 2 pages back-to-back so that each "game board" has the work areas on both the front and the back of the page.)

First provide each student with a stack of 10 unifix cubes and a game board. (They will need at least 2 crayons - and perhaps more colors.)

Introduce the challenge in your mini-lesson, model the "game play" on the smartboard by breaking apart a 10-stick to show 4+6=10. Discuss how mathematicians decompose numbers by breaking them apart. Demonstrate how to color in the first addend on the game board (4) with one crayon color, and then color in the second addend (6) with a different color. Then send them off to discover ALL the different ways we can make "10".

Challenge them to come up with more creative ways to add up to 10, such as "2+3+5=10" and "2+2+2+2+2=10".

Their eyes will light up, and your little ones will be eager to begin this type of creative thinking. Share out at the end and discuss how we need to work flexibly and creatively with numbers and as mathematicians.
