A method I use to show progress in a lesson: on entrance, give each student a ticket. Ask them to write down all that they can about the stimulus that you have put on the ticket (in this case grouped tables leading to estimating the mean). Throughout the lesson, students can add detail to their ticket as they develop understanding and explore mathematics. Allow 4 or 5 minutes for them to finish their ticket off. As they leave I get students to post their ticket in a 'postbox&' and then I can check and give it back next lesson/use AFL to make decisions about planning.
