The Iron Man Dialogue Writing Example Text, Feature Identification & Answers

An example text demonstrating dialogue writing with direct speech based on The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes plus accompanying resources.

The WAGOLL contains a conversation between Hogarth and his parents after he first sees the Iron Man. It is based on a part of the story containing no direct speech. A feature find sheet and an extract from The Iron Man are also included.

Pupils examine the model text using the feature find sheet before writing their own version or completing the dialogue.

• Actual words spoken with inverted commas on either side
• Reporting clause separated from words spoken with comma, question mark or exclamation mark
• Variety of speech verbs
• Adverbs
• Actions of the characters
• New paragraph every time the speaker changes
• Feelings of characters shown through action
• Sentence spoken but split into two by the reporting clause
• Two or more sentences spoken at once with reporting clause at the beginning/end
• Two sentences spoken at once split into two by the reporting clause
