34 English grammar dice games, fun to play, all fully resourced - just add dice!

This is a whopping 112 page word document containing all 34 of my grammar games. Unlike a lot of sellers, my work is NOT a PDF, so you can edit and adapt to make it work in your classroom. This resource represents a fair few evenings and weekends (I know - get a life!). All of these games have been tested in class, and adjusted if needed - they have a real impact on learning. For each grammar skill there is:a child friendly explanation of the grammar concept; printable rules and resources for a lively dice game; suggestions to challenge or support learners; suggestions for application of the skill in written work. For some grammar games there is also a lesson plan and a presentation. Here are some of the skills covered: determiners/plurals/commands, questions and statements/ simple and compound sentences/ adverbs/ proper nouns/ classifying nouns/ contractions/ pronouns/ prepositions/prepositional phrases/ apostrophes/ adjectives/ sentence variety/ parentheses/semi-colons/ discussion/ persuasion/ complex sentences / causal connectives/ fronted adverbials/ speech/ relative clauses/ modal verbs/spelling/language of persuasion/argument/discussion

Structuring Analytical Essays - Writing Frames

Structuring Analytical Essays - Writing Frames

Targeted at KS3 and KS4 pupils for the reading assessments, the resources provide pupils with a guided structure (with arrows) about how they can build a convincing analytical argument. The structure is modeled and pupils are given opportunities to follow the structure and analyse alternative extracts independently for the entire lesson. This works great in group work and independent tasks that lead to presentations. Distinguished by arrows and boxes, the pupils explore how each sentence provides a different purpose. Each box includes a separate statement; in following each box, pupils begin to realize how their sentences move from the topic sentence to evidence, to analysis then the reader's response and concluding the writer's intentions. The analytical structure is adaptable to different texts and provides a great scaffold for all analytical writing tasks.

The significance of minor characters in Great Expectations

The significance of minor characters in Great Expectations

Targeted at mixed ability KS4 pupils, the PowerPoint embeds a variety of relevant extracts that expose Dickens's social meaning behind the minor characters in Great Expectations. This resource can be used throughout the week by focusing on one character per lesson. Alternatively, it can be compressed into one lesson where pupils analyse a specific character in their group then present their analysis to the class. The extracts and differentiated questions for each character effectively stimulates pupils' motivation to explore how specific words impact characterisation and what Dickens reveals about society through this minor character.

11+ survival guide part 6 CEM tests

11+ survival guide part 6 CEM tests

This is the sixth part for the verbal reasoning component of the 11 plus examinations for grammar and selective entrance schools all across the UK. There are 40-42 (including CEM format) possible types of exercise that can turn up on these entrance exams, these are the first quarter. These methods are unique to me and I spent some years with real pupils developing them to the highest possible standard. This part (6) for exercises that appear to crop up in the CEM format and there is some crossover between the CEM format and the NFer format some schools are still using. It contains:Type 38- match the word (also see part 4 of our survival guides)Types 10 and 10A and - matching synonyms and antonymsTypes 41 and 41A- synonyms and antonyms, with missing lettersType 42- correcting words in paragraphs, with missing lettersType 12B- odd one out (see part 2 of our survival guides for Type 12A)Type 1A- rearranging sentences (see part 1 of our survival guides for Type 1)Type 18A and 18B- choosing the correct word to complete a sentence (A) or paragraph (B)Therefore, this is for schools that use the NFER Nelson, Nelson Bond or Bond style 11+ verbal reasoning component and CEM. All these sections are/will be available in the shop. The answers are included, with some explanations. For parents, tutors and pupils who'd like to try for grammar or other selective school, each page has a full and friendly explanation of what to do and what tricks and traps to avoid, with sample questions to try at the bottom of each page.Fourteen pages long and at a bargain price of £2 per section. ***Note that one or two typeos are always deliberately left in the NFer 11+ guides because they are notorious for having mistakes in their exams, one reason why many schools and LEAs are moving to CEM formats. Pupils need to know what it 'feels' like to find an error, to 'know' that examiners are fallible, how not to panic when they find an error as they will be awarded the mark anyway, and just to let the teacher/invigilator know. Parents/tutors: do have this explanation ready when your child/pupil attempts these tests. Errors are most common on maths and codes exercises. If you find an error in this please let me know and I will send you for free a corrected one, as the CEM papers tend not to have typeos like the NFer ones. All care is taken to try and avoid errors in these papers.***
