KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals Introduction

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals Introduction

This is part 1 of guided reading unit of work for Gerald Durrell's My Family and Other Animals. In a world where I can't get my year 8s away from Diary of a Wimpy Kid, I wanted to show them what real writing is like! Durrell's descriptions are so beautiful and his family so entertaining that it has won round every class I have read this with. It is an autobiography, so makes a great introduction for the students to write about their own families and recount their own anecdotes. Entertaining non-fiction can be hard to find, so this is great! These first few lessons include discussions about families, lots of simple questions to check understanding and resources for learning new vocabulary to build students' confidence and show them how sophisticated reading could enhance their own writing. The next PowerPoint introduces them to Corfu and the family and there is a language analysis focus. This took 8 45 minute lessons to complete, so could work as a mini-SOW if you only want to study the first chapter.I have a mixed ability class with four EAL students, so words and questions are differentiated to support both those students and my more able level 6 students. This has genuinely challenged and seen progression in all of them.I did not have a copy of the book for every student, so I photocopied pages from mine for them. For this reason, the resource focus on specific, manageable and memorable passages from most chapters. There is so much they can get out of analysing these! The film versions do a great job of bridging the plot gaps as well as bringing a lot of joy to the classroom.

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

KS3 Reading: My Family and Other Animals

An entire, lesson by lesson SOW with guided reading questions, games, activities and assessments. Although this is reading, there are lots of writing assessments woven in so that students see how the disciplines support each other. I hope it inspires some of your students the way mine have taken to it!I used the pdf of the book which is available online for some of my weaker students and also watched the television series. The resource as a whole was excellent for my G&T students who really enjoyed the family's eccentric lifestyles and saw more than a bit of their own lives paralleled despite the historical context. There are lots of opportunities for cross-curricular learning with Geography and History, so speak to your fellow teachers and see if you can cover it at the same time as they are teaching about WW2, post-colonisation, Greece, coastlines, or Globalisation. Please rate and review it if you enjoy it :)
