Vocabulary Treasure Hunt

A fun plenary or starter game for the main beginners' topics in any language. On each slide there are 16 squares with five treasures hidden behind them. Students translate the vocabulary on the boxes and if they get it right they choose a square and get a point/sweet/sticker if they find a treasure. This activity is based on the gamification theory that random rewards make games more addictive and fun. There are 34 slides with treasures hidden in different places about these topics (two slides for each topic) Numbers 1-20Numbers 20-100LettersAnimalsFamilyMonthsDatesAppearanceVerb endingsQuestion wordsSportsHobbiesHobbies/Sports and Time phrasesSubjectsDaysTownFoodNote: In presentation mode click on squares to make them disappear and reveal the treasures.

Numbers: Japanese Vocabulary Card Sort

Numbers: Japanese Vocabulary Card Sort

This is a card sort to help students learn words for numbers (30 words in total). This resource covers 1-20 and 30,40,50,60,70,80,90,100,1000,1000000. This would be a useful task with younger groups or low ability groups. There are three separate files, depending on how you want to present the task.- The 'teacher copy' shows a grid with all items already matched. - The 'student version' is a random layout, print this out and give to students. They can then cut out the items and match them, or stick them into their workbooks.- The 'quick cut' is designed so that you can produce 10 packs of cards quickly and easily using a guillotine. Each page has the same card 10 times over. This allows you to remove words that may not be suitable or needed. Alternatively you can print the same page twice double-sided to produce flash cards.

'Sport' Blockbuster Game for use in French / German / Spanish / EAL / Other Languages

'Sport' Blockbuster Game for use in French / German / Spanish / EAL / Other Languages

Blockbusters Game - works in same way as old TV show of the same name.Pupils work in teams giving sentences in French (or other language) about chosen sport. Can be differentiated so that some classes may just be giving the name of the sport in the foreign langauge, while other might have to use the words in a sentence / given tense / give an opinion.Split class in blue and white team with one team having to get a column of their colour hexagons fron top to bottom, the other team has to get a row from one side to the other. The team going across gets to go first. If the team get their sentence correct they put a hexagon of their colour on that sport symbol. Then it is the turn of the next team. Tactics come into play (e.g. blocking the other team so they have to go around the opposing team's hexagons)

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Japanese Lyrics)

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (Japanese Lyrics)

Every two years, our school puts on a Summer Carnival where each year group gives a performance based around a different country. Last year, Year 3's country was Japan. The children learnt how to sing 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star' in Japanese. They also performed a contemporary dance and wore traditional Japanese clothes and accessories. It was a fantastic event and the children loved every minute of it. I have uploaded the lyrics in case you would like to try something similar at your school. This link takes you to the music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGgOKEaMWZU

Visual literacy in Japanese language poster

Visual literacy in Japanese language poster

Teaching visual literacy is everyone's responsibility! This poster was designed as part of a cross-curriculum promotional campaign to teach staff in all faculties in a New England NSW high school about visual literacy being a component of literacy in every area of the curriculum and also to provide students with an example of how a visual image can be deconstructed to find the hidden messages. This poster is an example of how the techniques of visual literacy can be used in Japanese language classes. It applies an excellent template developed by the English Teacher's Association of NSW to a tourist magazine cover.
