#### GCSE higher Areas of Triangles Investigation

Teacher notes on an investigation on areas of triangles, also covering topics such as simplifying surds, Pythagoras' Theorem, congruency and algebraic formulae. The problem the students must solve is 'When the perimeter of a triangle is 20 cm and it is an isosceles triangle, how many possible triangles can there be?'. Students find this out through working out the area of each possible triangle and seeing a pattern. An extension is also included in this resource which gets pupils to work out the total possible number of any triangle (not just isosceles) with a perimeter of 20 cm. Students then work to find a link between the base length of the triangle and the number of possible triangles which can be drawn with that base length.A worksheet is included for each activity as well as notes and guidance on how to conduct the investigation with pupils.

#### Corner Collaboration--Special Right Triangles

Corner Collaboration is a Kagan strategy also called 4 Corners where students work in their home group to solve problems and then at teacher signal, go to pre determined corners to compare answers with a new group and get a different perspective on solving problems. In this activity, students will find 2 sides of special right triangles: both 45-45-90 right triangles and 30-60-90 right triangles. Students will use formulas to find those missing sides lengths. There are 4 different worksheets with 6 problems each. Each group will get a different version of the worksheet as identified by a musical symbol. I allow about 15-20 minutes for the students to complete (your class may need more) and then when the timer goes off, students go to the corner with the symbol matching their sheet. They can compare answers and discuss any errors. When the timer goes off again, we meet as a group to discuss any difficult or confusing problems, and this gives me an idea to reteach or move on. Great for promoting discourse in the classroom.

#### Pythagorean Theorem Digital Matching Cards

Students practice using the Pythagorean Theorem in this quick and easy Drag and Drop activity in Google Slides for Google Drive or Microsoft One Drive. Students have 16 diagrams of right triangles with a missing side and must find the answer on one of the other slides. Students then cut the slide from its position and paste it next to the problem. The first time I used digital matching cards in the classroom, students took 2 days to complete all 16 pairs of cards, subsequent times they were much faster to understand the process. Included in the directions is the link to the activity in Google Slides, answer key, instructions on how to share with students and instructions on adding additional notes or instructions to students before sharing.
