NINE-USA CITIES

NINE-USA CITIES

This presentation can be used for children between the ages of 9 and sixteen. There are fifty five slides and thirty nine pages of additional resource materials. I have selected the following cities because of their contrasting site, situation and geographical locations. They are: Boston, New York, Washington DC, Chicago, Detroit, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and New Orleans. This selection of cities offers extended studies in both Physical and Human Geography. Included in the slide notes and the resource file are suggested work challenges involving on line work, historical links, geographical writing skills, discussions and other map drawing exercises. The presentation can be targeted at nine and ten year old students but it will be necessary to use the shortened version of the script. Children between the age of eleven and fourteen should be able to cope well with most of the challenges. Key Stage 4 (fourteen to sixteen years) students involved in examinations will be able to link this resource with a large range of the exam topics. Some examples include: Boston and New York - Settlements, site, situation and geographical location. New Orleans - Flooding, Mississippi Drainage Basin, River features including deltas. Detroit - Industrial and population change. Chicago and Detroit - Location, Waterways and Trade, Glaciation and the Great Lakes. Los Angeles and San Francisco - Environmental Hazards and Tourism. Las Vegas - Desert environment, Water resources and the Entertainment Industry. Washington DC - Capital City, history, location, population, government and tourism. There are several IT challenges on offer that involve constructing a quiz word grid, following the course of the River Colorado by using on line maps, developing knowledge of site, situation and geographical location with a starting point in Downtown Chicago. The whole project is aimed at developing a wide range of geographical knowledge along with IT skills and the opportunity to improve writing techniques in preparation for higher level studies. I personally would use this resource for Year 9 groups in preparation for Key Stage 4 Geography. The History content makes it just that little bit more interesting.

Settlement patterns (complete lesson)

Settlement patterns (complete lesson)

This lesson introduces the terms linear, dispersed and nucleated settlements. It comes complete with PowerPoint and worksheets to structure the activities. The pupils first learn what the phrases mean, and then … … see if they can identify the patterns in aerial photograph examples of all three. They then go on to look at the causes that lead to the development of all three types of settlement pattern. After this, the pupils describe each settlement pattern in their own words … … and then using online maps like google, they try to find examples. The lesson starts to introduce the idea that the larger the settlement, the more services it has. Lastly, if the pupils have time, they find and print off aerial photos of each settlement pattern using the satellite feature of online mapping tools.

Google Tour Creator- Creating a FREE web-based Google Street Maps Based 'Virtual Tour'

Google Tour Creator- Creating a FREE web-based Google Street Maps Based 'Virtual Tour'

Google Tour Creator is a FREE web-based tool lets you build a VR ‘tour’ using Google Street View imagery and the bonus is that you can even add your own 360 photos, if you have that available. The interface is designed with educators and pupil in mind and is all simply drag-and-drop. The flexibility of tour creator is that you can choose any points of interest within the Google Street View maps and add extra texts, or points of interest if you like. With the Virtual Tour you can save any tour you have made and also publish it, for public or private use. The ability to import tours to the Google Expeditions app is not available yet but will be very soon states Google. Being able to create an Expedition and share it with a classroom of pupils is a great opportunity for technology being able to bring people closer, to understand other people worlds. Not every pupil will need a VR headset as this can be created and used on a laptop attached to an interactive whiteboard, but for those that are lucky enough to have a class set the sense of immersion and engagement would be outstanding I think. This presentation informs you what Google Tour Creator is and I have created a simple model that can be used to show pupils as an example.

How can the Favelas be improved? Trumps Game - Teach Me Geography

How can the Favelas be improved? Trumps Game - Teach Me Geography

Aim: This is a fun and competitive TRUMPS GAME that explores issues relating to improving living conditions in favela areas of Brazil, helping students to focus on a variety of social, economic and environmental challenges that rapid urbanisation and migration has brought to the poorest areas of the city. Although this resource is based within the slum or shanty settlements of Brazil, the content within it is just as applicable to any poorer urban area of low income countries. Learning Objectives: To research what life is like for people who live in the favelas of Brazil. To analyse a range of different ways that favelas can be improved to make them better for everyone. To evaluate what is the best way to improve living standards in poorer urban areas of low income countries. This resource includes: A set of 20 beautifully designed, full colour .pdf gamecards, ready to be printed out back-to-back and used straight away. A set of 7 3x3 full-colour .pdf gamecards, ready to be printed out single sided and used straight away. A beautifully designed, full colour .pdf worksheet to be used to collect information and analyse information about improving living standards in the favela both during and after play. A full colour .pdf rules and teaching ideas sheet to be displayed on a screen during the lesson, or printed out and used with the playing groups. Conflict in National Parks

Conflict in National Parks

A lesson (or easily a week’s worth) on National Park conflict issues. This is based around a ‘case study’ looking at a map of a local farming area (which I made-up) to get students to consider the problems created by proposed changes in UK National Parks. Includes maps, questioning tasks, letter writing cloze exercise, word search etc. All of the worksheets are included in the powerpoint and I’ve added some notes about how I used this. Additional ones could easily be made as needed by editing slides. Initially made for an interview lesson and then adapted for teaching (once I got the post - yay!) It was made for low ability SEN students in year 9 but I think could be easily adapted (and I’ve used it with year 7 since as well so quite flexible). I found it took 2-3 lessons with mine to do it nicely. Thanks for looking :)

Country Factfile Flags

Country Factfile Flags

Pupils research a country for basic information. 2 per page. Draw flag on the back. I used these for First Level (P2/3) with an atlas and online websites. Suggestions for use: Print on card so the research can be recorded one side and pupils can draw the flag of the country on the other. Then attach paper straws to one side to make a 'flag' for a great display!

China's Climate

China's Climate

As China is such a large country it’s not surprising to find that the climate varies from place to place and that these variations have different impacts of people’s lives. These worksheets help students to understand climate graphs, how to read ad draw them. They also give them a chance to develop their own graph and peer mark eachothers ideas with supporting comments.

Who Lives In The City?

Who Lives In The City?

Brazil’s cities are renowned for their rich/poor divide. Favelas, the term used in Brazil for the shanty towns, have grown up on the outskirts of urban areas since the late 19th century. The people who arrive in the city are usually very poor. They have come from the countryside believing the city will be a better place to live providing them with jobs, money and a brighter future for their families. These worksheets put the students in these people shoes and have them try to make the difficult decisions poor people in Brazil, as well as other countries, have to make about moving, once moved and dealing with their choices.
