IAL Topic 8 Coodination in Animals and Plants

(1)
A series of complete lessons covering the syllabus content for the IAL Biology topic 8B. This includes the structure and function of the mammalian nervous system. The structure of the spinal cord and brain. The peripheral nervous system How we investigate the structure and functions of the brain The effect of drugs on synapses Chemical control in plants Phytochrome and seed germination/flowering I have tried to include various methods for both independent and group learning. There are also short assessment questions to check understanding.

Polymerase Chain Reaction and DNA Profiling

(0)
Edexcel Specification 6.17 - 6.19 Two lessons which takes students through the process of how the polymerase chain reaction works and how gel electrophoresis can produces banding patterns. There are opportunities for class discussion and tasks for the students to complete. I have also included a video which discusses DNA fingerprinting.

A2 Biology Forensic Science and Time of Death

(1)
Edexcel Spec Link - 6.16 and 6.20 Three lessons which focus on the forensic science element of the topic. The first lesson looks at the role of microorganisms in decomposition. This is a recap session, looking at the carbon cycle. Lesson 2 introduces the idea of using body temperature and rigor mortis to determine time of death. lesson 3 finishes the topic looking at the role of bacteria and insects in decomposition. This links to succession which had been studied previously. There are many different student activities including questions and answers on the topic.

Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance (A level)

(0)
Tow power point lessons which look at the action of antibiotics on bacteria - bacteriostatic and bactericidal. Also, how natural selection has made certain bacteria resistant to antibiotics and why this has occurred. There are activities for the students to promote active learning plus video resources and questions.

Developing Immunity - Natural, Artificial, Active and Passive

(0)
This resource focuses on Edexcel specification link 6.11 It introduces the different types of immunity. There is a video resource and questions to check understanding. The information cards can be printed and put around room for students to collect information to make it more interactive. I was short on time so I went through them on the board as students made their own notes.

Immunity - Non Specific and Specific Responses to Infection

(0)
4 lessons focusing on the non-specific and specific responses to infection. I have split the lessons into 4 parts due to the subject material being very complex. The lessons cover Edexcel specification links 6.8 - 6.10 but can be used with other exam boards The lessons have many different opportunities for assessment and recalling previous learnt material.

Case Studies of Disease: Tuberculosis and HIV

(0)
2 lessons looking at the causes, symptoms and treatments of 2 deadly diseases. Edexcel Spec link 6.6 There is plenty of opportunity for class discussion and links into history for both diseases. I have included graded tasks in both lessons as my students enjoy working their way up to the higher grades.
Bacteria - methods of invading the body
ALEVELBIOLOGYFORTHENEWTEACHERALEVELBIOLOGYFORTHENEWTEACHER

Bacteria - methods of invading the body

(0)
Edexcel Spec link 6.7 (i) (ii) An introduction to how bacteria are able to spread from one person to another. We then look at how the body protects itself against pathogen entry. This is a circus activity where students gather information from around the room (cards provided). Finally we research how bacteria cause the disease with endotoxins and exotoxins.
Bacteria and Viruses including viral reproduction

Bacteria and Viruses including viral reproduction

(0)
Edexcel specification link 6.5 (i) (ii) Two power point complete lessons focusing on the structure of viruses and bacteria. The second lesson looks at the lytic and lysogenic cycles with a short video clip on retrovirus reproduction - this will be looked at again when we study HIV. The lesson includes an exam question with mark scheme.
