Lesson 9 of a scheme of learning about Animal Farm for new AQA. Low ability year 9. In this lesson, students used a scaffolded and differentiated sheet to analyse Squealer's speech, and they then completed a 20 minute writing assessment answering the question: How does Squealer uses propaganda in chapter 3 and how is this similar to Russian propaganda? Peer assessment at the end. This was an observed lesson graded outstanding.

A task to get students to think about register they would use for different audiences and purposes. In pairs or individually, give each student a card with a technique, picture and scenario, and get them to write an example. Then, get students to mark each other's and give improvement. If time, get students to have another go with other cards and work on their green pen target.

LA Y9 - part of a series in a scheme. Spent first half of the lesson finishing off reading chapter 3 with lots of directed questioning. They had to see if they could spot any propaganda techniques learnt in previous lesson, and anywhere where they could see potential foreshadowing. they then looked closely at the speech by squealer - differentiated - to look for specific propaganda techniques. they then looked in more detail using the grid.
