It is based on Chapter 5 of the novel, when Barney speaks to the Snargets in Stig’s cave, but in the example, Stig has the ability to speak English and joins in the conversation. A writing feature identification worksheet, answer sheet and extract from Stig of the Dump are included. Use the WAGOLL before pupils write their own versions or continue the model text. Two activities involving identifying correctly and incorrectly punctuated direct speech. Pupils must look carefully at the direct speech to check if the correct punctuation has been used and if it is all in the correct place. There are two activities provided: • Direct Speech Punctuation Cards: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. • Direct Speech Punctuation Worksheet: pupils identify whether the speech has been correctly or incorrectly punctuated and then make any necessary corrections. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks). Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including: • The reporting clause before the direct speech • The reporting clause after the direct speech • Two or more sentences of direct speech together • The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech • The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’. This collection of verbs commonly used when cooking or writing recipes are useful for pupils writing instructions or recipes and for ESL students speaking or writing about cooking. The sheets comprise of 30 cooking verbs. Each verb comes with a definition, accompanying photo and sentence containing the key word. These cards can be printed double-sided onto A3 for a handy help sheet, or onto A4 to be cut into cards and distributed to pupils/students according to ability. They can also be made into booklets or display posters. The verbs are arranged alphabetically and each word is used as an imperative verb in an imperative sentence.
