How many different ways can Santa wrap the presents? An investigation for children to find all of the combinations of wrapping paper and ribbon. Differentiated worksheets are included and I used real wrapping paper and ribbon for LA/SEN children.

A silly little story but my class loved it and it helped to highlight and address some misconceptions. Can be used as an intro or in a plenary to look at doubles and halves.

Levelling sheet that can be use to gain a snapshot of pupils' sub-level within level 1. The first two columns of the document contain assessment criteria linked to a simple task or question associated with the assessment focus. A third column is for assessor&'s notes and pupil&';s responses as evidence for levelling.

Use number stories to help children visualise or act out a word problem or calculation. These number stories are based around addition and subtraction. Children are first shown a number story and relates it to a calculation as a model. The process is then turned around and scaffolded as the children are given a calculation and supported in making a number story from the calculation given. A set of differentiated number sentences is provided which the children can then use with practical equipment, drawings or writing to tell their own number stories.

Some number stories which ask the question - is this addition or subtraction? Pupils need to be able to answer this type of question if they are going to understand and work through mathematical word problems.

A pictorial problem solving activity for year 1 children. Which combinations of animals will give you the number of feet required? How many different ways are there of making a given number? Picture cards provide visual support for the activity.

My class enjoyed Frooby so I did another one for them. This time focussing on halves, both numbers and shape.

A number problem for year 1 children to solve involving triangular numbers. We had been looking at different methods the children could use to solve number problems, e.g. drawing diagrams, using apparatus, making playdough models, etc.. They worked in pairs or small groups to encourage them to talk about their approach. The problem is easily differentiated by changing the final number. More able children and those in higher year groups could look at the pattern and think about rules for solving the problem regardless of the number given.

These are one step more and less problems that I've been using in Year 1. We're practising the vocabulary of 'more' and 'less' and their association with add and subtract. I'm also doubling up on a bit of "know and recognise the value of different coins." The last three slides require secure understanding and reasoning skills and so are good for extension or mastery/more able work. They ask questions such as: "Stu has 8p. Every week he spends 2p on sweets. How many weeks will his money last for?" Or: 'Amandeep has 2p. Meera has 5p more in her purse. Which coins does Meera have in her purse? Can you draw all the different combinations of coins that Meera might have? I hope you find it useful!

Two differentiated Venn Diagrams for use with KS1 children or less able KS2 children. The first sheet sorts on a single criteria (whether the animal is nocturnal or not) and the second sheet sorts on two criteria, with overlap (animals that live on land/water). Also don't miss the opportunity for discussion around animals that go outside the circles on the second Venn Diagram!

Frooby the Maths Dragon throws a tea party but will the fussy blue witch spoil his carefully prepared tea party? Revise or introduce symmetry in a vertical line with your class using the Return of Frooby story powerpoint. Follow-up the story with some Frooby-themed images for sorting, drawing or describing lines of symmetry. Three pages of differentiated, pirate-themed addition and subtraction word problems (one step only). When I use these, I cut them up or get the children to cut them up and stick them in individually, which allows space to show their working and avoids pages full of worksheets glued in. Each page makes specific reference to the 2013 National Curriculum Key Stage 1 Mathematics programme of study (Year 2 expectations): Pupils should be taught to add and subtract numbers using concrete objects, pictorial representations, and mentally, including:  - a two-digit number and ones  - a two-digit number and tens  - two two-digit numbers 

Based on the 2016 interim assessment framework for KS1 mathematics, this form provides additional evidencing of the Working Towards criteria for maths. Useful for children who struggle to record their knowledge.

Three differentiated 'Seaside Snack Shack' menus for addition and subtraction work as well as one-step problem solving involving addition and subtraction, including missing number problems. The three menus cover objectives as follows: Menu 1 - - use number bonds within 10. Menu 2 - - use number bonds within 20 - add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including 0. Menu 3 - - solve one-step problems that involve addition and subtraction, using concrete objects and pictorial representations, and missing number problems such as 7 = ? - 9.

Practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s with these fun Easter puzzles! Perfect for Year 1 and revision in Year 2. The pictures help children to access the activity independently. I encouraged my pupils to work systematically, looking for the lowest multiple and working up because those that didn’t were more prone to making errors. I thought they would walk this activity but there was enough challenge in there to keep them interested and engaged. Spotting errors was a good way to check their understanding. Solve the code to reveal the shape names and match them to the correct shape. Perfect for Key Stage 1/lower Key Stage 2 revision of common 2D and 3D shape recognition and naming. There is an answer key included so that children can mark their own work if desired. I recently printed pages 2 and 3 of the file double-sided and used it as an end of term activity with my Year 1s - it kept them very quiet! It could also be used as a back to school baseline activity or to provide AfL information when you are about to teach a unit on shape. These numbers are lower than the end of year (EOY) expectations for Year 1 but activities can easily be extended for more able pupils or if you are teaching this unit later in the year. There are opportunities to practise with smaller numbers (0-10) and also larger numbers up to 100. A set of loop cards is included which need to be printed double-sided and cut out, as well as cards for a paired activity and plenty of worksheets. Personally, I cut out strips or blocks of the sheet to stick in the child’s book so that their books aren’t full of worksheets and/or half finished work.
