Letter Formation Kit - Teaching Handwriting with Phonics - Phonics for SEN

(0)
The Letter Formation Kit enables you to teach letter formation alongside phonics to pupils as part of literacy instruction. The materials and activities mesh specifically with the Phonics for Pupils with SEN programme teaching scope and sequence but could be used alongside any phonics programme. This booklet contains over 330 pages of practise activities focusing solely on learning to form the letters, specifically: • print style lowercase letters, • individual letter formation at the basic code level (Book 1), • a small number of sound spellings made up of two or three letters at advanced code level (Book 3), • upper case letters (introduced at a point in the programme appropriate to your pupils). The resources provide intensive practise in the context of direct and explicit instruction by the teacher or teaching assistant. The resources are not intended to be given to pupils as a whole or series of worksheets for them to work through independently.

Managing HF Words - 'Inconvenient' Words - Phonics for SEN

Nearly all words can be phonically coded and there are actually very few common exception or tricky words. However, we do need to bear in mind that the very point about these words is that they are high in frequency and so are likely to appear in even simple text and pupils may encounter them when at a very early stage of learning to read and working through a phonics programme. These words are not tricky but are inconvenient. So, how do we work on these words? The solution is that the programme takes a gentler approach to these with a long-term view of the situation. The high frequency words are studied intensively when the child works on the appropriate focus sound as they work through the programme, but a scaffolded approach is taken to supporting children to read and spell high frequency words when they encounter them in the early stages. The cards in this pack primarily help staff to support pupils to read and spell the words as they arise. Staff in schools have varying experiences, knowledge and understanding of phonics and the cards are intended to support them to better understand how the inconvenient words are put together. There is information about: the number of sounds in the word and what they are, the sound spellings (graphemes) – indicated by a larger gap between them, why the word is inconvenient – how it fits into phonics progression, blending - colour coded sound spellings get darker as the pupil blends though the word. The words selected are taken from the DfE’s document, The Framework for Reading – Teaching the foundations of reading July 2021, plus a few additions. Although primarily designed to be a tool to support staff, the cards could be keep on hand and used with pupils to support the reading and spelling strategies above, as needed when reading or writing. They are NOT intended to be used as flashcards or a display that encourages pupils to learn the words visually and remember them as whole words.

My Story stories - Personalise Decodable Readers Basic Code for pupils with autism - Phonics for SEN

(0)
REVISED August 2021 I have been working with some talented young illustrators, Asha Wilson and Chloe Barlow to revise the ‘My Story’ Stories and these are now available here. The ‘My Story’ stories are a set of seven phonically decodable basic code readers aimed at children with autism. Some pupils with autism or other additional needs can be super-focused on a special area of interest and prefer to engage with materials related to it to the exclusion of others. ‘My Story’ Stories give the flexibility to focus on the child’s area of interest when reading a book. All the books are about a character called Pat. Pat can be anyone or anything that appeals to the child – a cat, a train, a Lego figure, a unicorn… anything as long as it can be personified. Simply print out the book and print out enough pictures of ‘Pat’ to stick in the grey spaces. Then share the book with the pupil. Alternatively, the pupil could stick the pictures in after reading the text. Each of the seven books in the series corresponds to a set of sounds, as taught in Book 1 of the Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs programme.

Environmental Labels for Incidental Phonics - EYFS & Pre-formal SEN - Phonics for SEN

(0)
This pdf includes 16 pages of environmental labels suitable for the Early Years or pre-formal SEN classroom. Two sets included one with and one without pictures. Each label is coded to highlight letters and groups of letters (graphemes or sound spellings) to support reading. Coding includes a gradual left to right darkening of sound spellings to encourage blending through the word. Multi-syllable words display colour grading within the word for blending syllable by syllable and suffixes are shown in dark green. Includes coded modelled behaviour or the ‘good’ strategies to support positive behaviour. Pupils’ attention can be drawn to the sounds in words and their relationship to the graphemes in the words. Teachers and TAs can model blending to show how they use this knowledge to work out the word. This prepares pupils for phonics instruction ahead. Pupils should not be encouraged to learn the words as ‘visual wholes’ or ‘sight words’.

Phonics for Pupils with Moderate to Severe or Complex SEND: nonverbal pupils, pupils with SLCN, pupils with autism and pupils with physical disabilities A Companion Booklet to the Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs Programme In this booklet the activities in Books 1-6 of the programme are adapted to enable access for: • pupils who are non-verbal, for example those who are unable to speak or choose not to speak or whose speech is difficult to understand, the spoken word not being their agreed method of communication in learning situations, e.g. users of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), such as a communication chart, communication book or voice output device, • pupils with significant physical disabilities that impact on fine motor skills, for example those who are unable to manipulate resources to respond and ‘record’, write using a pen or type using any type of keyboard or • pupils who are both non-verbal and have significant physical disability. A range of low tech access strategies and associated resources are included in the booklet. Letter Slider 3 The Letter Sliders enable the pupil to manipulate letters to play with and practice working with words. Letter Slider s has a slider for sound in advanced code in Books 3-6 of the programme. Once assembled, the pupil slides the strips up and down in the slots on the base card to isolate letters to work with them in words. Letter Sliders are multipurpose as they can be used in a number of ways: • Teacher builds a word and the pupil reads it – BLENDING. • Teacher gives a spoken word and the pupil segments the word sequentially and moves the strips to match the letters one by one and so spell it – SEGMENTING. • Teacher asks pupil to change a base word into another given word by sliding the strips to change the graphemes – PHONEME MANIPULATION. This is quite challenging at this level as it may require changing two graphemes e.g. /u/ sound words book>cook>could>would>good. • By focusing on the sounds in the spoken word first and then how the letters represent the sound is supportive of ORTHOGRAPHIC MAPPING. • ASSESSMENT of the pupil’s understanding of how words are put together, knowledge of the basic code and blending, segmenting and phoneme manipulation skills can be carried out by working with nonsense words. Includes a base card to work with the split vowel digraph (split sound spelling). It’s also great fun! Also available: Letter Slider 1 has sliders for Sets 1-7 Basic code CVC words. Letter Slider 2 has sliders for VCC, CVCC, CCVC and CCVCC words.

Movable Alphabet 3 - Alternative Teaching Sequence with Base Plates - Phonics for SEN

Movable alphabets are great for focusing your pupil’s attention on how words are put together and they are great for hands-on word building activities. They are also super-useful for pupils who have poor fine motor skills and find letter formation difficult, such as those pupils with physical disabilities or complex needs. There are five movable alphabets for you to choose from so you can select the most appropriate to meet your pupil’s needs. Movable Alphabet 3 is organised to reflect an alternative teaching sequence common to other programmes and is arranged in four sections: First section: Basic code (1:1 sound to letter correspondences), Second section: Introduction to advanced code (e.g. sounds /sh/ and /th/ etc) Third section: Advanced code (complex sounds that are represented in more than one way e.g. boat, note, go, snow, toe etc) in alphabetical order vowels then consonants. Fourth section: Focus Grid The Focus Grid is simply a set of shaded but otherwise blank squares that is placed just after the introduction to the advanced code section. Once the pupils start working in advanced code they have to deal with many sound spellings (graphemes). It would be rather bewildering for a pupil to have to trawl through all of them, so this handy section allows you to place just the sound spellings related to the sound you are currently focusing on for the pupil to choose from. In this way things are kept manageable. You could use Velcro dots to secure the cards to stop them slipping around when you are building a word. Note: when printing please make sure you accommodate any narrow margins. The five versions of movable alphabet have graphemes arranged: 1 in alphabetical order, 2 according to the teaching order of Phonics for Pupils with SEN, 3 according to a commonly used alternative teaching order, e.g. Sounds Write, then in alphabetical order in vowels and consonants. 4 layout as on a QWERTY keyboard (useful if you have a pupil with significant fine motor difficulties who is likely to type rather than write as a long-term recording method), 5 as separate colour coded grapheme cards with no base plates. In addition to the movable alphabet, version 4 also includes two Point and Spell Boards in keyboard layout. These could be used with the pupil pointing and the teacher scribing or by partner assisted scanning.
