Algebra and Shapes. Perimeter and Area Formulas

(1)
This power point can be used very flexibly to teach, practise or revise various algebraic processes whilst also reminding students about the basic properties of shapes. The slides show a wide variety of shapes. For each shape students can create an expression or formula for its perimeter ( and also for the area for many of the shapes ). In doing this they can practise collecting like terms, using brackets in expressions ( and multiplying them out ). The formulas created can then be used to substitute numbers in or for rearranging work. There are two worksheets ( with answers ) to go with the powerpoint which concentrate on creating expressions for perimeters. This powerpoint provides basic practice on the angle fact that the ‘angles on a straight line add up to 180°’. It has slides that just cover straightforward calculations that can be used for mental arithmetic practice and others that require a problem solving approach. Equations can also be written and solved to find the answers. Some slides use three letter notation to identify angles. CIRCLES - Vocabulary
SkillsheetsSkillsheets

CIRCLES - Vocabulary

(1)
This colourful powerpoint uses diagrams, animations and photographs to introduce more vocabulary needed for working with circles e.g. chord, arc, sector and segment whilst revising the words introduced in ‘Circles- Introduction’ ( radius, diameter, circumference, centre, circular, semicircle ). It is aimed at GCSE students and below, both at foundation and higher level. The later slides show the connections between circles and 3D shapes and extend vocabulary to sphere, hemisphere, cylinder, ellipse, cone and concentric circles. The slides have notes and suggestions accompanying them. The worksheets further reinforce the names of different parts of circles and one is designed to make students draw and measure their own diagrams and introduces ideas they will meet later when studying circle theorems. The video shows how to draw a hexagon by constructing it inside a circle using arcs. Some students find drawing circles very difficult and anything that motivates them to practise is useful. DfE references for GCSE 9-1 G9, G1, G4, G12 G9 'Identify and apply circle definitions and properties, including : centre, radius, chord, diameter, circumference, tangent, arc, sector and segment. See my other resource ‘Circles - Introduction’ which starts from the beginning with radius and diameter calculations, symmetry etc. For more resources like this please visit the Skillsheets shop.
The Equation of a Circle x² + y² = r²
SkillsheetsSkillsheets

The Equation of a Circle x² + y² = r²

(1)
These ten worksheets guide students through the origin of the x² + y² = r² equation of a circle and use a variety of problems to reinforce their understanding of the equation and its uses. Tangents are also introduced as are the methods for finding points of intersection between lines and circles. There are plenty of reminders for solving simple quadratic equations like x² = 16 and also simultaneous equations where one equation is not linear. Written for the GCSE 9-1 specs but the material is also useful for A-level C2 students. Some of the sheets are similar so one can be done in class and the other used for reinforcement. There are problem sheets to extend the most students. As ever, the aim with SKILLSHEETS is to encourage learners to think about what they are doing and use diagrams to help them understand the topic. Fraction Grids
SkillsheetsSkillsheets

Fraction Grids

(1)
This collection of 10 worksheets will help students to visualise fractions better by shading diagrams to represent particular fractions. There is progression from the simple pages where the boxes can be shaded by just counting 3 out of 4 boxes for example to those where the student has to see how to split a 4x5 grid into tenths in order to shade 7/10. There are worksheets that require fractions to be identified then cancelled or for a diagram to be interpreted in two different ways e.g. 10/15 = 2/3. One page considers the shaded AND unshaded parts of a grid that must always make up the whole. The last page illustrates how fractions can be compared in size by converting them to have a common denominator. DfE reference for GCSE 9-1 R3, N1 Please review this resource. Equations with Brackets
SkillsheetsSkillsheets

Equations with Brackets

(1)
9 worksheets containing linear equations where brackets need to be multiplied out as the first step. The sheets get progressively harder for extra practice or revision. The unknown appears on both sides of the equations. For the first worksheets the answers are all positive whole numbers but later equations have negative or fractional solutions. Students are asked to check their answers for the first worksheets by putting the solution into both sides of the original equation to make sure it works out the same. The answers and working out are included. GCSE from 2017 references A17, A4, A3, A2, A1, N3, N2 For more resources like this please visit the SKILLSHEETS Shop
