DT Teaching Resources: Chocolate Bar (SMART Notebook slides and worksheets) This unit of work explores the national curriculum UKS2 objective ‘select from and use a wider range of materials and components, including construction materials, textiles and ingredients, according to their functional properties and aesthetic qualities’ in an easy to follow way. Students are taught a range of design skills from investigating, designing, making and evaluating. It contains a total of 15 SMART Notebook slides spread across the first 3 lessons all presented in child-friendly work booklet. There are no slides for the remaining 3 lessons as this requires the children to make their chocolate bar and evaluate them. These lessons can be found in the children’s workbooks. Literacy Unit of Work: Kensuke’s Kingdom (4 complete weeks and activities) This unit of work uses the novel Kensuke’s Kingdom written by Michael Morpurgo to develop reading and writing skills in an easy to follow way. The text is shared with the students through whole class reading and are encouraged to respond to the text through questioning and activities stopping at relevant parts. Throughout the scheme of work there are also SPaG starter activities mainly aimed at year 6 objectives but this could easily be adapted to suit any year group. The writing genres that are taught within this four week block are: diary entries, character descriptions, newspaper reports finally leading to the students writing and creating their own survival guide (How to survive being marooned on a desert island!). There are also opportunities to actively teach the students how to proof read and edit their own writing cutting down on teacher marking and work load. PLEASE NOTE: The white board slides have been created as flipcharts (ActivInspire - Studio) however, these can easily opened in SMART Notebook or Powerpoint. This 6 week unit of work enables children to explore the reliability of information on the Internet. The following objectives are covered over the 6 weeks: Use a search engine to find information using given keywords Decide upon suitable keywords to use when conducting a search Use complex search criteria to locate specific information. Compare the types and advantages & disadvantages of different search engines Use Google docs to record ideas about information reliability Reflect critically on information and made improvements to searches by using boolean operators. Compare information from a wide range of sources. Take part in an informed discussion about the impact of unreliable/fraudulent web sites All resources are listed here and are referenced in the lesson plans. A great unit that enables the children to critically think about the information they are gathering from the Internet. PLEASE NOTE - I have uploaded the worksheets as part of a Google assignment within Google Classroom (see attached image) but you will also have the paper worksheets for children to work from if you do not have this facility
