Autumn term Year 2 lesson plans for Phonics and Spelling. Planning refers to Twinkl planning and powerpoints at times. Planning covers spelling patterns; y, wr, le, kn, gn, il, al, ies, el, dg, dge, ce, ci, cy.

This is a three week unit of work that explores the year 2 reading and writing objectives through an adventure writing theme. Please see the preview picture for the objectives covered. It is based around the book The Tin Forest by Helen Ward and links well to my setting description unit of work in my shop, a great follow up unit along the same topic. There are also ideas of cross curricular links to make The Tin Forest a half termly topic. All planning is on powerpoint slides that can be used in the lesson and contains teacher notes and printable resources.

A one week unit of work (five lessons) on setting descriptions for Year 2 using the text The Tin Forest. This unit would be used after the children have read and understood the text, such as in a whole class reading unit. All the lessons are on powerpoint that can be used with the children, there are teacher planning notes for each slide. Each lesson consists of a starter, main/activity and plenary. The objectives covered mainly focused on good sentence structure and clear, coherent narratives that use nouns (as the subject), verbs (as the predicate) and clear stops. A great unit for early on in year 2 when children are building their writing stamina. Additional content needed - WAGOLLs/examples of setting descriptions.

Five lessons based around the KS1 reading skills using the text The Owl Who was Afraid of the Dark by Jill Tomilinson. The activities are designed to build fluency and stamina in reading, bridging the gap from phonics to reading for pleasure. These first five lessons include; Exploring key vocabulary that appears in the text. This is done through acting, games and activities, pictures word maps. Retrieving key information from text and pictures to answer questions, explain reasoning and make predictions. Decoding the text, retrieving information, labelling and drawing pictures to show understanding. KS1 SATs style questions to help children become more familiar with how these look and how to answer them. All resources are on powerpoints and can be used in lessons on the whiteboard or can be printed as a scaffold/support for children to work on or stick in books. There is also teacher notes attached to each slide which will help you tailor these lessons for your children and provide scaffold or challenge. There are green bubbles on some slides which act as challenges in a mixed year group class or when there is a range of need.

The unit teaches key vocabulary, rhyme, retelling, sequencing, story structure; beginning, middle and end, imitation, innovation and invention. Phase 5 lesson plans based around Letters and Sounds order of teaching.

Every year I put on a Phonics event for parents in EYFS and KS1. This powerpoint covers subject knowledge, articulation of phonemes, activities, research and terminology.

This unit of work comprises of a series of whole class reading lessons using DERIC (Decode, Explain, Retrieve, Interpret, Choice). All the questions and activities are based around developing key reading skills and are planned for Year 2 (start of the year) but also suitable for Year 1 and EYFS with a bit of adaptation. These first five activities include; Exploring vocabulary relating to the word ‘worry’ using a word map, including exploring definitions, synonyms and antonyms and putting the word into context. Retrieval of information from the front cover to help predict what is going to happen in the story and look at key features such as the author and illustrator. PSHE/PSED work to support emotions of ‘worry’ Characterisation and linking to other familiar stories or characters/activating prior knowledge and discussion of fiction and non fiction All resources on powerpoint and can be used in lessons on the whiteboard or can be printed as a scaffold/support for children to work on or stick in books. There is also a range of notes attached to each slide which will help you tailor these lessons for your children and provide scaffold or challenge.

Based around the DERIC skills and the text Room on the Broom. Used to develop reading fluency alongside reading skills.

Based around the DERIC reading skills and incorporating phonics too (explained in the resource) using the text Worrysaurus by Rachel Bright. This is part 2 of the planning and resources, part 1 can be found in my shop. This text also addresses the PSHE/PSED theme of feeling worried. All resources and planning notes on powerpoint; Activity 6 - Focuses on decoding, explaining new vocab, retrieve and interpreting using the blurb. There is also a focus on nouns. Activity 7 - Focuses on the first few pages of the text and the skills explain by uplevelling vocabulary, acting out the text for understanding and clarity, looking at verbs as actions, using a word map to explore more challenging vocab and finishes with the PSHE/PSED theme around feelings (retrieval/interpret). Activity 8 - Starts with a word class activity and then moves on to read the rest of the text, developing a love of reading and reading for pleasure. It concludes with KS1 SATs style questions. Activity 9 - Starting with a retelling activity/game teaching the retrieval skill, then moving on to focus on the skill of interpret with a PSHE/PSED theme. Helping children understand the feeling of worry and how to deal with it. There is also a science and D&T element that can be built into this activity through your topic lessons. Activity 10 - Building on activity 9 and retelling, children learn to summarise. They also continue to retrieve/interpret (with PSHE/PSED theme) with a variety of differientated tasks. There is also an opportunity to link to English and letter writing.

Part 2 - Five more activities based around the DERIC reading skills; decode, explain, retrieve, interpret and choice using the text Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival. These last five activities include; Exploring vocabulary relating to the word ‘unexpected’ and ‘sad’ using a word map, including exploring definitions, synonyms and antonyms and putting the word into context. Exploring the phrase ‘the words tumbled out’ to help children infer meaning and look at familiar words in different contexts. Retrieval of information from the text and pictures. PSHE/PSED work to support emotions of ‘worry’ including strategies to help children. Exploring the author’s/illustrators choices, why are the pictures in black and white with limited colour? Decoding activities including read and draws to build fluency and put phonics into practice! KS1 SATs style questions to help children become more familiar with how these look and how to answer them. Ordering/Retelling and Summarising activities Finishing with a reflection back on their initial predictions. All resources on powerpoint and can be used in lessons on the whiteboard or can be printed as a scaffold/support for children to work on or stick in books. There is also teacher notes attached to each slide which will help you tailor these lessons for your children and provide scaffold or challenge.

PSHE/PSED work to support emotions of ‘worry’ including exploring a letter from the author to the reader and a ‘thinking mind map’ to help children deal with any worries that may be ‘stuck to them’.
