Making Math Meaningful

Average Rating4.63
(based on 5 reviews)

I absolutely love teaching and making learning meaningful, fun, challenging, yet attainable to all students. My experience includes working with gifted students, ELL students, special education students, as well as regular education students. I have worked with students of poverty and students with many resources available. My students are always in the higher achievement and higher growth category. My classroom has differentiated activities going on regularly and cooperative learning daily.

This is a great project to integrate health and science as well as make the students more aware of eating healthier. The students are directed to websites where they create a meal and gather information about calories, fat grams, sugar, and carbohydrates. There are several parts to this project and is very eye opening to them. MCC7.RP.A.3

Would You Rather? Percentage Task Cards for Centers

(1)
This set of real world task cards includes twelve different situations that are presented where the students will use percentages to calculate both scenarios to help them decide which is mathematically better. This is a great activity to get students up and moving around the room. The task cards can be printed out and posted around the room. Students can then randomly go to problems to solve. Going in a random order allows students to move at their own pace. MCC7.RP.A.3

Clue Words Chart

(1)
This is a chart that will allow the students to know exactly which clue words are commonly used in algebra and which operation matches those clue words. It is very easy to understand this chart, and it is extremely helpful when teaching translating verbal phrases into algebraic expressions. This is also helpful in lower grades when teaching translating a word problem into a math sentence in order to solve the word problem.

Find the Error Activities for the Year! - 7th Grade Common Core

This is a pdf of all of my 7th grade Find the Error activities. In these activities, students are asked to analyze problems that have been answered incorrectly, find the mistake, and work the problem correctly. By analyzing work, students are acquiring a much deeper understanding of the concept. In my classroom, I have the students complete the activity individually and then discuss their solutions with their group. If there is an inconsistency in the group solutions, they look at the answer key that I have provided in a folder on their table. I go from group to group listening to the rich discussions and helping as needed. Included in this bundle: Integer Operations Operations with Rational Numbers Writing Algebraic Expressions Simplifying Expressions Solving Equations Solving Inequalities Proportional Reasoning Percent Applications Data and Graphs Geometry Probability

This is a great lesson that incorporates percentage calculations into the real world at the same time as motivating students to study and do well in order to make a good life for themselves. This pdf can be used on your smartboard to guide students through the lesson or put on your website as a self guided lesson. Also included is a student handout. My students LOVE this lesson and really have a rich discussion about economics, government, college, budget, and their future. Our lesson was Where do my Tax Dollars Go? I pulled up the wasteful government spending report to go along with a power point I made for that lesson! It was very eye opening! MCC7.RP.A.3 MCC7.RP.A.3

Where do my Tax Dollars Go? - An activity on government spending and the national debt

This is a follow up activity did after "Paycheck Percentages". In this activity, groups analyzed and discussed graphs and compared government spending in many areas. They then looked at wasteful government spending, included. Each group created an infographic on the most outrageous and wasteful spending by the government that was included in the booklet linked in this document. (The group members voted on what they felt was the most outrageous.) Infographics were shared and explained to the class by groups and then posted for everyone to see. MCC7.RP.A.3
