Eco-burger project

(2)
identifying environmental damage of food choices - excellent literacy exercise. Students to create advertising campaigns for their environmentally friendly burgers - using statistics to justify their choices
Bias in Science
clairephillyclairephilly

Bias in Science

(0)
Originally created for IB chemistry: the Nature of Science. Can be adapted to any science, and any scientist. The example biographies are of Fritz Haber. Students read one of the biographies, identify key facts from them, and then rank the scientist as a person and a scientist. Upon comparison with others in the class (who read different biographies) they should notice differences in their rankings. Discussion of why will (hopefully) identify the bias in the documents.
Development of a Scientific Theory template

Development of a Scientific Theory template

(1)
for IB science subjects: Nature of Science. Allows students to explore different aspects of how different scientists contribute to a scientific theory. Originally designed for IB chemistry but fits with physics and biology as well.

Exam keyword flashcard e.g. 'explain' 'evaluate'

(0)
students make flashcards on exam keywords such as 'explain' 'evaluate' 'contrast' 'describe' etc Word document contains definitions on page 1 - to be printed on card and given to students to write on the back of. page 2 contains teacher answer page. Power point contains instructions and words to be matched.
Theory Law Hypothesis

Theory Law Hypothesis

(0)
for IB Sciences: Nature of Science. Worksheet contains definitions of theories, laws and hypotheses. Students then identify an example of each in every topic throughout the course. Originally developed for IB chemistry but works for IB biology and IB physics as well.

Ancient Egypt Science: making a model shaduf

(3)
Produced for a primary school lesson on Ancient Egypt. Shadufs were used to irrigate fields by making it easier to transfer water from the river Nile to higher ground. Teacher information includes historical background, scientific terminology, photos of modern shadufs and materials list. Student task includes: making a model shaduf and guidance for testing the model. Format given as both PDF and DOCX

Elements and compounds concept map

(0)
Concept map in the elements and compounds topic. 2 levels of difficulty; one requiring students to label the links between concepts/keywords, the other requiring students to first identify the links then label them (extension). Answer page provided. Suitable for Key Stage 3 science as revision at the end of the topic. Or as a starter for Key Stage 4.
Energy Transfers in electricity generation

Energy Transfers in electricity generation

(0)
4 levels of differentiation dependent on Year group or ability. Students identify ways to transfer energy from the sun all the way to a lightbulb. There are options for alternatives on the open ended task: e.g. wind turbines etc. or natural gas. Clue Sheet can be distributed one clue at a time. Students should attempt to complete the sheet with as few clues as possible. Students must be aware of steam turbines and generators. Answer page available As a further extension, students can be encouraged to write explanations on the sheet.

Biology and Chemistry Data Analysis Assessment - Ammonium Sulfate

(0)
Ideal for IGCSE or GCSE Science. Focus on Making Salts (purification techniques) and Fertilisers. Resource gives an adapted method with student results and observations. Exemplar answers are provided on a spreadsheet. Task instructions include making a table, graph and drawing conclusions and evaluating the experiment. (task instructions suggest electronic table and graphs, but hand drawn could be acceptable) Checklists are provided to students to ensure they have covered all aspects of each task. A marking rubric is included (grades marked as 1-7 but could be adjusted to match any course).

IB DP Chemistry Compulsory Practical card sort

(0)
Preparing students for IB DP Chemistry Paper 3 Section A experimental questions. This card sort activity can be used to familiarise students with terminology for each compulsory practical. Students can match the topic, experiment, common equipment, essential keywords and the most common errors. After matching the cards, students can use the equipment and keyword list to practice writing out short methods. Cards are colour coded according to the type of information. Topics 1-10 are included

Links with acids and alkalis unit YR7 KS3 give these hazard symbols out to pupils as they enter the room, get them to describe what they see in the picture, what they think the hazard is, and how they might reduce the risk of the hazard. This is a starter that should be done before introducing Chemical Hazard Signs
